Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Software Engineer III (Java & JavaScript) to design and develop scalable applications across identity and access management. You will work on authentication infrastructure, leveraging AWS ECS/EKS, and contribute to AI-assisted development workflows.

Qualifications

Software Engineer III (Java & JavaScript)

Do you enjoy designing and developing scalable, high-performance applications using Java and JavaScript?

About the team

You will join the Identity & Access Management team, which owns the authentication and authorisation infrastructure underpinning Elsevier's global product suite.

We build and operate a highly available identity platform that integrates with multiple identity providers, entitlement services, and downstream APIs, running on AWS ECS and EKS.

About the role

This position performs moderately difficult research, design, and software development assignments within a specific software functional area or product line. The candidate should have the ability to work on individual pieces of work and solve problems, including the design of the program flow of individual pieces of code, effective coding, and unit testing.

The ideal candidate has a practical understanding of CI/CD pipelines and a strong commitment to code quality, testing, and collaborating in an Agile environment. Fluency with GitHub workflows and pull-request-based collaboration is essential.

Our teams are increasingly adopting AI-assisted development workflows, and we are particularly interested in engineers who are excited about using AI tools to help design, write, evaluate, and improve software.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interface with other technical personnel or team members to finalize requirements.
  • Write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity.
  • Work closely with other development team members to understand moderately complex product requirements and translate them into software designs.
  • Successfully implement development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews.
  • Operate in various development environments (Agile, Waterfall, etc.) while collaborating with key stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with GitHub workflows, pull requests, issue tracking, and collaboration in a distributed or co-located team.
  • Resolve technical issues, as necessary.
  • Keep abreast of new technology developments.
  • Complete bug fixes.
Requirements
  • Proficiency with data manipulation languages. Understanding of data modelling principles.
  • Ability to work with complex data models.
  • Proficiency in development languages including but not limited to: Java/J2EE, JavaScript, JSP, HTML, Node.js, React, XML, SQL, Windows, UNIX.
  • Experience with Keycloak, Auth0, or another identity provider, including realm configuration, authentication flows, and OIDC client setup.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices - code coverage. Ability to work well with internal and external technology resources.
  • Ability to write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity.
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall). Knowledge of data manipulation languages.
  • Knowledge of data storage subsystems.
  • Knowledge of test-driven development.
  • Ability to write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity.
  • Ability to complete moderately complex bug fixes.
Good to Have
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Codex, for test authoring, stub generation, coverage analysis, or test-output investigation.
  • Experience treating AI-assisted tools as productivity accelerators within a quality engineering workflow while maintaining appropriate review and validation practices.
  • Experience with Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool, including the ability to read infrastructure definitions and understand how configuration changes affect system behaviour and test coverage.
  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes.
