Job Description

Put your love for smart tech to use

The Group Chief Operating Office is what makes us who we are. It’s one of the largest parts of Lloyds Banking Group, bringing together the technology, engineering and operations teams that keep the business moving. Our software engineers sit in platform teams across Group COO, with each platform aligned to a different part of the business. That means they work with teams across commercial markets, pensions, retail banking, mortgages, HR, Finance or Risk – building the services they need to do their best work. And as a Software Engineer graduate, your work will be anything but behind the scenes. You’ll help design, build and maintain the applications, platforms and digital services that millions of customers and colleagues rely on every day. From mobile banking and cloud infrastructure to AI-enabled solutions, you’ll use your smarts to decide what banking looks like tomorrow.

Two years. Real impact

Throughout this two-year scheme, you’ll do everything a Junior Software Engineer does. And while you build out your technical expertise within a specific team from the outset, your impact will be felt throughout the business. Expect to:

  • Develop your capability through a blend of structured learning and hands‑on experience
  • Get exposed to real business challenges in real environments
  • Transition from learning to delivery at an unmatched pace
  • Keep up with the latest software engineering practices, tools and technologies
What your work could look like
  • Work with experienced engineers, product teams, architects and tech specialists to build software that makes a real difference for customers and colleagues
  • Get stuck into coding with languages like Java, Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Swift, Rust and Golang
  • Learn how modern engineering works in practice, from cloud development and automation to continuous testing
  • Help improve the apps, digital journeys, APIs, AI-enabled tools and platforms that people across the bank rely on every day
  • Use technology to solve real problems, improve experiences and help the business work better
  • Build your confidence as an engineer while learning how software is designed, developed and delivered at serious scale
Support in your corner
  • A learning journey that’s made for you, delivered through digestible training modules
  • A chance to not just build on your existing knowledge but also grow in areas you’re interested in
  • The opportunity to learn directly from software engineers and technical specialists who know what they’re doing
  • Access to optional industry-recognised cloud certifications like Google and Azure to grow your technical expertise
Requirements
  • An understanding of modern engineering practices such as cloud development, automation and continuous testing.
  • A strong foundation in coding languages like Java, Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Swift, Rust and Golang would be advantageous in the application process.
  • This is a Software Engineer programme first. You may work with AI-enabled solutions, but if your real focus is artificial intelligence, machine learning or data science, our Data Science programme is likely the better route.
  • Note: We cannot sponsor visas.
Locations

This programme operates in various UK regional locations including London, Halifax, Leeds, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh. You’ll select one of these regional locations and will be based in that office for the duration of your programme. We support hybrid working, where you’ll be expected to spend a minimum of two days each week in the office where you have been placed.

Opening and Closing Date

Applications for our Software Engineer Graduate Scheme open on 10th September and close on the 29th November, except for the London location which closes on 11th October.

We keep your data safe. So, we’ll only ever ask you to provide confidential or sensitive information once you have formally been invited along to an interview or accepted a verbal offer to join us which is when we run our background checks. We’ll always explain what we need and why, with any request coming from a trusted Lloyds Banking Group person.

We’re focused on creating a values‑led culture and are committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve. Together we’re building a truly inclusive workplace where all of our colleagues have the opportunity to make a real difference.
