Job description

About the Role

As a Software Engineer (Frontend), you’ll build modern full-stack applications and customer-facing experiences across the On the Beach platform.

This is a genuinely full-stack engineering role, but with a stronger emphasis on frontend engineering, modern web development and customer experience.

You’ll work across the application stack, from React and TypeScript interfaces through to backend services and APIs, while collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, designers and analysts.

You’ll help us solve customer and engineering problems, improve the performance and quality of our digital products, and contribute to the continued development of the products and systems you work on.

What you’ll be doing day to day

You’ll work on customer-facing products used by millions of holidaymakers.

Depending on the team and problem you’re working on, this could include:

  • Building and maintaining production web applications
  • Commercial experience with React and TypeScript
  • Modern JavaScript and frontend engineering practices
  • Creating responsive and accessible user experiences
  • Developing and consuming backend APIs
  • Working with backend services and understanding how frontend applications interact with them
  • Building or supporting applications in a cloud environment such as AWS
  • Automated testing across frontend and/or backend systems
  • Debugging and troubleshooting production applications
  • Working collaboratively with product, UX/design and engineering teams
  • Making sensible technical decisions with support from more experienced engineers
  • Taking responsibility for features from development through to production
  • Contributing positively to engineering discussions and code reviews

You don’t need to be equally strong in every area.

We’re most interested in engineers with strong frontend fundamentals who are comfortable working beyond the browser and want to continue developing their full-stack capability.

Experience within ecommerce, travel, marketplaces or another high-traffic consumer platform would be useful, but isn’t essential.

You’ll be a great addition to our team if you have the following skills, knowledge and experience

We are looking for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical problems and building scalable systems that operate reliably under high throughput environments.

You will likely have experience in:

  • Building scalable, production-grade web applications
  • Strong commercial experience with React and TypeScript
  • Modern JavaScript and frontend engineering practices
  • Designing performant, responsive and accessible user experiences
  • Developing and consuming backend APIs
  • Building and operating applications in a cloud environment such as AWS
  • Automated testing across frontend and backend systems
  • Application monitoring, observability and troubleshooting
  • Working closely with product, UX/design and engineering teams
  • Making pragmatic technical decisions in fast-moving product environmentsTaking ownership of software from design through to production
  • Supporting and mentoring other engineers

You don’t need to be equally strong in every area. We’re most interested in engineers with excellent frontend fundamentals who are comfortable working beyond the browser and understanding the systems behind the customer experience.

Experience within ecommerce, travel, marketplaces or another high-traffic consumer platform would be useful, but isn’t essential.

What we’re looking for at this level

Beyond the technologies themselves, we’re looking for someone who:

  • Can independently deliver well-defined engineering work and take ownership of features
  • Is comfortable solving technical problems with support where needed
  • Thinks about the customer impact of the things they build
  • Understands the importance of balancing quality, maintainability and delivery
  • Contributes constructively to technical discussions
  • Communicates clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Is open to feedback and actively looks for opportunities to develop
  • Shares knowledge and works collaboratively with other engineers
  • Is comfortable working in an environment where priorities and problems can change quickly
