Have you ever walked into a place and felt right at home?
People are chatting, laughing, and exchanging ideas; they’re deeply invested. No one’s afraid to speak up, experiment, or fail. It’s a place where you’re celebrated for the value you bring, not the title you hold, and where you’re supported to do what makes you happy.

It’s what makes Phocas special.

We also have a rich twenty-year history as a trailblazer in data and financial analytics. Every day, we process vast quantities of data to help our customers uncover insights that improve decision-making and business performance. Our relentless pursuit of excellence has helped us grow to 300 people globally, with headquarters in Sydney and Product & Development in Christchurch.

People love working at Phocas because of our amazing culture. We have some of the happiest employees around, and even happier customers. We delight them by doing the hard work using the latest cloud technologies and the best tools for the job.

As an engineer on a cross-functional team, you'll help build meaningful, high-impact Financial Planning and Analysis applications used every day by people making tough, important decisions. Our applications are simple yet powerful: just ask our CFO, who can't stop raving about them!

What will you work on?
You’ll join a team solving complex problems for enterprise customers, including:

  • Inter-company Eliminations: Creating UI and data capabilities that allow customers to manually or automatically reconcile data between internal business entities when rolling up to Head Office level.
  • Multi-currency: Enabling customers to manage budgets and forecasts across regions with flexible exchange rates and interfaces that support consolidated views in a single currency.
  • Headcount Planning: Designing and delivering a new standalone repository for staff data to support better budgeting, forecasting, and workforce management.

What are we looking for?
We’re after a full stack engineer with strong front-end skills backed by solid back-end experience, including:

  • React, TypeScript
  • Java
  • SQL and database querying
  • Performance optimisation

You’re confident making and communicating well-informed technical and architectural decisions and thrive in a collaborative team environment. You're driven to move fast and experiment boldly, putting prototypes in front of customers early and iterating based on real feedback - polishing what works, pivoting what's promising, abandoning what doesn't deliver value. You're curious, pragmatic, and hungry to learn, all while delivering business value at speed.

To be successful, you’ll bring:

  • A strong history of developing advanced web applications
  • Experience delivering software products on cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS)
  • A creative approach to solving real-world business problems
  • Enthusiasm, curiosity, and a growth mindset
  • A genuine desire to work with kind, capable people
  • Experience with financial or accounting products
  • Working with large-scale datasets
  • Effective use of test automation

Why work at Phocas?

  • The people – we hear it all the time: our team is the #1 reason people love working here
  • Plenty of fun and social events – including the occasional silly game and lots of food
  • 10% professional development time – every engineer gets one day per fortnight for learning
  • A sunny Sydenham office with lots of space and parking for all types of wheels
  • Southern Cross health insurance, life, TPD, and income protection cover
  • Extra paid parental leave
  • Flexible/hybrid working options

We’re an Accredited Employer and value international talent, but due to current visa settings and processing times, we can only consider applicants with current New Zealand working rights.

Phocas is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or veteran status.
