Job summary

SII Group UK seeks a Software Engineer for Autonomy to support the development, deployment and evolution of software, data and AI capabilities across complex and safety-critical programmes.

You will work with software engineers, architects, DevOps, and stakeholders to create scalable, secure software solutions enabling autonomy, data integration and digital transformation in defence and technology environments.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of C++ in safety-critical contexts.
• Experience on Linux/Windows software development environments.
• Proficient in Python and modern software practices.
• Experience creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
• Understanding of DevOps/DevSecOps and Agile methodologies.
• Experience with cloud technologies, APIs and microservices.
• Knowledge of databases such as MySQL or MongoDB.
• Autonomy systems integration experience.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience in regulated environments (defence/aerospace/medical).
• Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Degree or equivalent in engineering or software discipline.
• Eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).

Job description

We are seeking a Software Engineer for Autonomy to support the development, deployment and evolution of software, data and AI capabilities across complex and safety-critical programmes. Working within a newly established software development team, you will contribute to the creation of scalable and reusable software solutions that enhance operational capabilities and support strategic growth.

You will work closely with software engineers, architects, DevOps specialists and stakeholders across multidisciplinary teams, developing secure and robust solutions that enable autonomy, data integration and digital transformation initiatives across defence and technology-focused environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, test and deploy secure software solutions.
• Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support automated delivery.
• Develop reusable and scalable software capabilities.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong C++ development experience or knowledge of equivalent safety-critical programming languages.
• Experience developing software on Linux and/or Windows platforms.
• Knowledge of Python and modern software engineering practices.
• Experience creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
• Understanding of DevOps, DevSecOps and Agile methodologies.
• Experience with cloud technologies, APIs and microservices.
• Knowledge of databases such as MySQL, MongoDB or similar.
• Experience with autonomy systems integration or autonomous software architectures.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Experience delivering software within defence, aerospace, medical or other regulated environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering or software discipline.
• Eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).

Desirable Skills

• Experience with AI, Machine Learning or autonomous systems.
• Knowledge of containerisation and cloud deployment technologies.
• Experience with large-scale data integration programmes.
• Understanding of software architecture governance and design assurance.
• Knowledge of ITIL, Enterprise Architecture or information management frameworks.
• SAFe Agile experience or relevant technical certifications.
