Software Development Manager - Just Walk Out Technology, JWO

The Team: From the merchandise stores at Sports venues to small-format stores such as Amazon Go, a new kind of technology is powering stores with no lines and no checkout. You simply use the Amazon app to enter the store, take what you want from our selection of fresh, delicious meals, grocery essentials and merchandise, and go.

Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by our Just Walk Out (JWO) Technology. It automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt. Designed and custom-built by Amazonians, our technology uses computer vision, sensor fusion, and advanced machine learning. Innovation is part of our DNA. We need people who want to join a high-reaching program that continues to push the state of the art in computer vision, machine learning, distributed systems and hardware design.

The Role: Everyone on our team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment that’s more startup than big company. We’re solving problems that span a broad range of domains: computer vision, image recognition, machine learning, and distributed systems. This role involves building/scaling Machine Learning platform used for developing all the algorithms at JWO.

As a Manager of Software Development, you'll manage a team to define, drive and execute on this vision. You'll develop your team of highly motivated and talented builders who can collaborate with product managers, technical specialists, and principals across the company. You should be customer obsessed, data-driven, and comfortable influencing up and down a large organization, especially at senior levels.

Key job responsibilities

1. Define the long-term vision, strategy, and goals for your teams
2. Manage a development team responsible for the core of Amazon Go's Just Walk Out technology
3. Prioritize, plan projects and features, manage partners, and track external commitments.
4. Drive continual improvements to the efficiency and flexibility of the platform while keeping an extremely high bar on customer trust, performance, and availability.
5. Foster the career development of your direct reports.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience
• 7+ years of engineering experience
• 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
