Join a startup Defence & Government company as a Software Developer (DV Cleared) in Nottingham.
Defence software doesn't get a second chance to be wrong. This growing Nottingham-based company builds mission-critical systems for government and defence clients, and it's scaling fast without losing the small-team feel that makes decisions quick and ownership real. If you already hold DV clearance (or can be transferred), you'll be one of the people trusted to work on the sensitive projects that most developers never get near.
Design and build software for classified defence and government systems, from architecture through to deployment
Write clean, well-tested code in a fast-moving startup where your work ships quickly rather than sitting in a backlog
Work directly with government stakeholders to translate operational requirements into working technology
Debug and optimise existing systems, some of which carry real operational weight
Contribute to architecture decisions early. At this size, your opinion actually changes what gets built
Pair with a small, senior engineering team and pick up context on defence-specific standards as you go
Active DV clearance, or eligibility and willingness to undergo DV vetting
Solid commercial software development experience, ideally 3+ years, in a modern language such as C#, Java, Python or C++
Comfort working in secure, regulated environments where process matters as much as code
Strong problem-solving instincts. You'll often be handed a problem, not a spec
Good communication skills for working with non-technical government stakeholders
A genuine interest in defence technology and a willingness to wear multiple hats as the team grows
Salary of £48,500 to £60,000, depending on experience
Equity in a company that’s growing quickly, not just a token gesture
Flexible working hours around a full-time office presence in Nottingham
Learning and development budget to build skills specific to defence engineering
Flat structure where you’ll work alongside founders and senior engineers directly, not through layers of management
Defence spending in the UK is rising, and Nottingham has quietly built itself into a real hub for this kind of work, with strong links to nearby defence and engineering employers. A Software Developer (DV Cleared) role gives you access to problems most of the industry never sees, and clearance itself becomes a career asset that opens doors for years afterward. Good developers in this space tend to move fast into senior and specialist roles, because demand for cleared talent consistently outstrips supply.
