Job summary

Miller Maxwell Ltd is seeking a Software Automation Engineer to own and extend an internally developed provisioning platform. You will automate Linux server builds, manage secrets with Vault-compatible tooling, and raise the bar for patching, configuration, and release processes across a mix of Linux and Windows environments.

You will work with a technically deep team to deliver automation across on-premise infrastructure and cloud usage, with a focus on secure, scalable, code-driven operations.

Qualifications

• Degree in a STEM subject.
• 5+ years of commercial Python automation experience.
• Excellent Python experience as the primary language across automation.
• Automation engineers with financial sector experience will be considered.
• Familiarity with provisioning physical servers and virtualised environments.
• Comfort with infrastructure as code and use of AI tools to accelerate work.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve an internally developed Python-based system for building and managing Linux servers.
• Introduce a Vault-compatible secrets-management layer to replace manual credential handling.
• Speed up patching and lifecycle management across the Linux fleet.
• Move network and firewall configuration into version control and ship changes via pull requests.
• Improve how internal applications are built, tested and released.
• Build a repeatable, hardened setup process for Windows desktops and a few Windows servers.
• Bring a small cloud footprint under the same automated, code-driven management as everything else.
• Improve alerting and monitoring so faults are caught before they impact operations.
• Pair with and review work from other engineers on the team.

Software Automation Engineer - Own Infrastructure Automation across this highly successful HFT.Miller Maxwell is working with a leading electronic trading organisation. The client builds almost all its own technology rather than relying on third-party platforms, and that philosophy extends fully into infrastructure. The estate is predominantly physical servers, with a small amount of virtualisation, running Linux throughout and Windows on desktops and select servers. You'd join an engineering group and take ownership of an internally built provisioning platform, with a broad mandate to extend automation across the wider stack. Lots of projects to be part of during 2026, 2027 and beyond.

Software Automation Engineer responsibilities:

• Own and evolve an internally developed Python-based system for building and managing Linux servers.
• Introduce a modern secrets-management layer (Vault-compatible tooling) to replace manual credential handling.
• Speed up patching and lifecycle management across the Linux fleet.
• Move network and firewall configuration into version control, with changes shipped through peer-reviewed pull requests.
• Improve how internal applications are built, tested and released.
• Build a repeatable, hardened setup process for Windows desktops and a handful of Windows servers.
• Bring a small cloud footprint (productivity suite + a major public cloud provider) under the same automated, code-driven management as everything else.
• Improve alerting and monitoring so faults are caught before they cause impact.
• Pair with, and review work from, other engineers on the team.

Skills required for the Software Automation Engineer:

• A degree in a STEM related subject.
• 5+ years commercial Python automation experience.
• Excellent commercial Python experience — this is the primary language used across the automation estate.
• Financial experience is not required; however, Automation Software Engineers with this experience will be considered.
• Familiarity with provisioning physical servers directly, along with experience in virtualised environments.
• Comfort managing infrastructure as code.
• Comfortable using AI tools responsibly to speed up engineering work.
