Job description

Position: Software & Automation Engineer

Location: Frome

Salary: Circa £70,000 + Generous Holidays + Bank Holidays + Pension + Career Progression + Comprehensive Benefits Package

We are seeking a Software & Automation Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team at a fast-paced site, reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager. This role offers the chance to take ownership of site-wide automation systems and make a real impact.

Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the site’s automation systems run smoothly and efficiently with robust recovery procedures in place.
  2. Train and empower staff to confidently use current and upcoming software technologies.
  3. Oversee the setup and management of site software and automation equipment.
  4. Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot complex issues and optimize plant performance.
  5. Drive innovation while improving equipment reliability and minimizing production downtime.
  6. Provide clear communication on changes while maintaining a tidy and organized workspace.
  7. Be part of an on-call team to tackle out-of-hours automation challenges.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Strong knowledge of PLC, HMI, ASI, I/O link, and network systems.
  2. Proven fault-finding and root cause analysis skills.
  3. A proactive, self-motivated team player with a positive attitude.
  4. Comfortable making decisions independently and working flexibly, including out-of-hours support when needed.
  5. Solid understanding of health, safety, and legislative standards.
  6. A willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  7. Excellent communication and organizational skills, with an engineering mindset.
  8. Ideally, some supervisory experience and a logical approach to problem-solving.
