Sociology Teacher - Full-time, Permanent (April 2025 Start)

Are you a passionate and knowledgeable Sociology Teacher eager to inspire students in an Independent School in Hammersmith? We are seeking a dedicated educator to join our Humanities department, starting April 2025. This is an opportunity to foster critical thinking and an understanding of society in a vibrant and supportive environment, with a mid-year start allowing for immediate impact.

About Our Learning Community:

Our independent school is committed to providing a holistic education that nurtures intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong engagement with the world. We foster a culture of open-mindedness and encourage students to explore diverse social perspectives. Our Humanities department is a collaborative team dedicated to delivering a dynamic curriculum that emphasizes sociological inquiry and social justice.

About the Role:

  • Deliver engaging and challenging Sociology lessons across Key Stages 4 and 5, following relevant examination specifications and tailoring the curriculum to the needs of students joining mid-year.
  • Plan and prepare high-quality lessons that cater to a variety of learning styles and abilities, ensuring all students are challenged and supported in their sociological understanding, despite the mid-year commencement.
  • Utilize a range of teaching methods and resources, including sociological theories, case studies, current events, and digital media, to enhance student learning and make the subject relevant to their lives.
  • Assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and support individual learning journeys, fostering a deep understanding of sociological concepts and skills, and helping students catch up or stay ahead despite the mid-year start.
  • Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level Sociology examinations, ensuring they have a strong understanding of assessment criteria and sociological methodologies, and providing targeted support for those joining mid-year.
  • Contribute to the development of the Sociology curriculum and resources, integrating current sociological research and social justice issues, and adapting to the school's needs for a mid-year transition.
  • Foster a love of sociology in students, encouraging them to develop their analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, and to appreciate the complexity of social structures and inequalities.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to create a cohesive and supportive learning environment, and to contribute to the wider academic and extracurricular life of the school, including participation in social justice initiatives.
  • Organize and lead sociological investigations, research projects, and debates, promoting critical engagement with social issues and encouraging students to become active citizens.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
  • Strong subject knowledge in Sociology, including sociological theories, research methods, and social justice issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach across Key Stages 4 and 5, including A-Level.
  • Experience in preparing students for GCSE and A-Level Sociology examinations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students of all abilities, including those joining mid-year.
  • A passion for sociology and a commitment to fostering social awareness and critical thinking.
  • Ability to organize and lead sociological investigations and research projects.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and to quickly integrate into a school environment mid-year.
  • Competitive salary (commensurate with experience).
  • Opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive independent school.
  • Access to excellent sociology resources and facilities.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression, with support for mid-year integration.
  • Contribute to a vibrant humanities department.
