An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time social worker in the Mental Health Social Work Team. The post offers opportunities to contribute to service delivery and development within Adult Services on a single and multi-agency/disciplinary basis. The team and this role operate on a region wide basis across all of Dumfries and Galloway, the successful candidate will be predominantly based in Stewartry. There is hybrid and flexible working options available to the successful candidate, with the main office base being a multidisciplinary setting at Gardenhill in Castle Douglas.

The successful candidate will hold a DipSW/CQSW/CSS qualification or equivalent. The successful candidate will work in a busy and dynamic Adult Team working with those from 16 years of age and beyond with severe and enduring mental illness. Experience of working in Adult Services would be advantageous but not essential.

In the role, you will be expected to carry out a range of assessments and care management tasks including:

  • Undertaking self-directed support, outcome focused assessments, risk assessments and management plans with Adults
  • Working closely with mental health partner agencies to promote discharge and recovery for mental health service user experiencing inpatient care.
  • Participation in the team daytime duty rota
  • Acting as a guardianship supervisor on behalf of the Chief Social Work Officer
  • Supervising private guardians
  • Supporting the facilitation of Adult's with Incapacity Case Conferences

A good working knowledge of Self-Directed Support is desired, as well as awareness of relevant legislation in particular the Adult Support & Protection (Scotland) Act 2007, Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 and Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000.


The successful candidate will have excellent communication, IT skills, be able to work under your own initiative while also valuing and contributing to a dynamic team culture. You should have a good ability to complete assessments of need and risk and be able to prepare plans that flow from these within time frameworks. In the role you will receive good support, regular supervision, and opportunities for development.

A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post and you will be expected to use Dumfries and Galloway Pool cars for any travelling required. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011 preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.
