Adult Social Care in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where our passionate, caring and committed professionals do brilliant work every day.

A globe-trotting tourist called Mr K had a stroke. Hospitalised and very vulnerable, we put a unique plan together for him. He wanted to travel to Germany, but he wasn’t well enough. We placed Mr K in a care home to recover. Initially he didn’t like it, but our social worker worked hard to encourage him to stay. And he enjoyed the experience so much, he stayed for a year. As he was recovering, Mr K’s social worker got him an iPad and a phone to help him manage his finances and arrange his next trip. This enabled him to book his tickets to Germany. ‘Auf wiedersehen’ and he was gone!

The Role:

As a Social Worker in our Statutory Team Enabling Pathways (STEP), you can make your own powerful contribution in the lives of some of the most vulnerable adults in Westminster. You’ll join a clinical team of nurses and mental health professionals. Your role is to carry out statutory social work duties for a small cohort of difficult-to-engage people who sleep rough locally. They have very complex needs – but between you and your colleagues, the STEP team has all the skills necessary to make a difference.

Together, you’ll support people with a range of mental health conditions and other co-morbidities. Working in a culture of compassion, integrity and openness, where every team member has the opportunity to thrive and grow, you’ll be part of a vital service focused on engagement and harm reduction. Taking a trauma-informed approach, you’ll help to link service users into the support services they need.

Your responsibilities will include undertaking care assessments, case management, safeguarding adults and initial preventative work. We’ll also expect you to carry out the statutory duties of an Approved Mental Health Professional. Across a small caseload, you’ll provide holistic care to address health inequalities and support long-term recovery. The vulnerable people you support will often have substance abuse challenges and may benefit from services such as motivational interviewing and relapse prevention. Visiting them from streets to day centres, hostels and shelters, you’ll be part of the change they need and deserve.

About You:

A qualified, registered social worker and Approved Mental Health professional, you are a great communicator and team player, with a flair for building relationships. Westminster is a diverse place, so it will be an advantage to have experience of working with adults who have mental health problems from a range of different ethnic and cultural groups. You have helped to make a difference in the lives of people with severe and enduring mental health problems and their careers. Please note that some early morning or late evening work may be necessary to engage with some service users.
