NHS Lanarkshire is comprised of Acute Services (which currently provide hospital based services over 3 main sites), Corporate & Property & Support Services, North and South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnerships which provide integrated primary healthcare and social care services to local communities and surrounding areas.

Key Details

  • Locations: This post is based in a one of our three main hospitals, University Hospital Hairmyers, University Hospital Monklands and University Hospital Wishaw.
  • Duration: Fixed term post for 12 months starting from the 18th of August 2025. Part-time hours available with pro-rata salary.
  • Eligibility: Applicants should be aged 16 to 24 years old on 1st of August 2025, (or up to 29 years for applicants who have a disability or those with care experience*) are eligible. Must demonstrate proficiency at SCQF Level 5/National 5 level.

What We Offer

  • Training: Gain invaluable on-the-job training to develop a diverse range of healthcare procedures and skills.
  • Qualification: Work towards achieving a Level 6 SCQF Qualification in Social Services and Healthcare with South Lanarkshire College, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.
  • Support: You will be well supported on this Modern Apprenticeship Programme with a dedicated workplace buddy, a Job Coach from the in-house Employability Team and regular networking sessions with other apprentices.

What We're Looking For

  • Motivated Individuals: Highly motivated and committed individuals eager to join our Modern Apprenticeship Programme.
  • Skills: Strong communication, interested in providing a high level of patient care and a passion for helping others, along with the ability to understand various procedures and processes. Must feel comfortable providing personal care to patients as this is a hands-on role.
  • Interest: A particular interest in healthcare roles, coupled with a positive attitude towards work and professional development.

Duties As a Healthcare Support Worker May Include

  • Monitoring patients and performing basic health checks.
  • Helping patients to eat their meals.
  • Assisting patients with getting up and going to bed.
  • Supporting patients with washing, oral care, bathing and dressing.
  • Assisting with visits to the toilet or changing incontinence aids.
  • Caring for patients at the end of their lives.

No Prior Experience Necessary: This Modern Apprenticeship welcomes applicants with limited work experience, including school leavers.
