Job summary

A leading engineering consultancy in the UK is seeking an experienced Building Physics and Sustainability Engineer. The role involves leading thermal modelling, developing net-zero carbon strategies, and collaborating with design teams in a modern office environment. Ideal candidates should have over 5 years of experience and proficiency in IES VE. This position can be based in either Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Company

One of the countries' largest, most successful and award-winning multidisciplinary engineering consultancies. They have multiple offices across the UK and have a solid reputation for successful project delivery throughout numerous sectors within the Built Environment. Projects can vary from small works to 100m+ across Education, Heritage, High-End Residential, Cultural, Laboratories and more. They have a very modern, open-plan office space, positive social culture and excellent support in place for staff training and development. They are currently seeking an experienced or senior Building Physics and Sustainability Engineer to join their team. Can be based in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Role

  • Lead dynamic thermal modelling, energy analysis, and sustainability assessments using IES VE or similar tools.
  • Develop and deliver net-zero carbon strategies, climate adaptation assessments, and passive design analysis.
  • Contribute to BREEAM, WELL, LEED, NABERS, and other sustainability certifications.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and environmental consultants to inform design decisions.
  • Support junior engineers and contribute to team mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Present to clients and stakeholders, and guide them through complex sustainability and compliance requirements.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, legislation (e.g., Part L, TM54, TM52), and emerging technologies.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Degree in Building Services, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in building performance and sustainability roles.
  • Proficiency in IES VE (mandatory), with experience in dynamic simulations, overheating, daylight, and energy modelling.
  • Strong knowledge of UK sustainability frameworks, including Net Zero Carbon Buildings, CIBSE guides, and Building Regulations.
  • Experience with energy strategy development and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
