Job summary

LMG is expanding its Smart Building team and seeks a Smart Buildings Commissioning Engineer to deliver MSI projects with emphasis on software development, data integration, and commissioning of integrated building systems.

You will collaborate with project teams, software providers, and clients to validate data exchange, configure edge devices, and ensure reliable performance across BMS, EMS, SMS, and IoT devices. The role emphasizes QA, documentation, and scalable integration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Demonstrable knowledge of software development, data integration, APIs, and problem solving.
• Understanding of networking and protocols in smart buildings and IoT.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

As a Smart Buildings Commissioning Engineer, you will play a key role in the delivery of Master Systems Integration (MSI) projects, with a particular focus on software development, data integration, data input, testing, and commissioning of smart building systems.

Working under the guidance of the Technical Services Manager, you will support the technical delivery of integrated smart building solutions, contributing to the development and implementation of data exchange mechanisms, APIs, system interfaces, and associated software solutions. You will be responsible for configuring, testing, validating, and commissioning integrated systems to ensure they operate reliably and in accordance with project and client requirements.

The role will involve coordinating the integration of data across a range of building systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Space Management Systems (SMS), lighting controls, IoT sensors, and other connected technologies. You will ensure that data is accurately captured, structured, validated, and exchanged seamlessly with client‑provided smart building platforms and digital environments.

You will work collaboratively with project, engineering, commissioning, and client teams, as well as technology providers and specialist partners, to identify and resolve integration issues, validate system performance, and support the successful delivery of projects.

Key areas of responsibility will include software and API development, data configuration and validation, system integration, testing and commissioning, fault finding, and technical documentation. You will also support quality assurance processes, ensuring compliance with agreed naming conventions, data standards, project specifications, and commissioning requirements.

As a key member of the Smart Buildings team, you will contribute to the delivery of reliable, efficient, and interconnected building environments, helping clients to make effective use of their building data and connected technologies. You will be expected to identify opportunities to improve integration processes, system performance, data quality, and the overall efficiency and scalability of our smart building solutions.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Software Architecture & Integration Definition:

• Define software integration requirements, data workflows, and communication protocols, including MQTT, BACnet/SC, and REST APIs, for connected building systems such as BMS, lighting, metering, catering, and IoT.
• Develop technical API specifications, payload definitions, and topic structures to enable third‑party systems to connect effectively with central MQTT brokers and Smart Connectors.
• Support the development and implementation of project data dictionaries, tag taxonomies (BDNS/Uniclass), and semantic data models, including UDMI, Brick, and Haystack, across relevant trade packages.
• Define configuration baselines, metadata requirements, and network onboarding requirements for edge devices, gateways, and IoT sensors.

Digital Commissioning & Technical Validation:

• Develop and maintain comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) scripts for validating digital data flows and integrated system functionality.
• Lead digital verification sessions using diagnostic tools such as ExchangeIQ and MQTT Explorer to validate live data streams against specified schemas, data models, and point schedules.
• Manage the Digital Information Requirements (DIR) process, defining the metadata, MAC/IP schedules, spatial parameters, and other information required from subcontractors prior to site enablement.
• Investigate data exchange failures, schema mismatches, and integration issues, coordinating corrective actions with subcontractors, developers, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain LMG installation and commissioning standards for IoT sensors, including occupancy and indoor air quality sensors, across wired and wireless connectivity solutions.
• Work closely with LMG supply chain partners, including XY Sense, PointGrab, Milesight, Wellstat, and Kaiterra, to ensure sensor installation, configuration, testing, and commissioning requirements are consistently achieved across smart building projects.

Stakeholder Leadership & Delivery Support:

• Provide technical guidance to BMS, lighting, catering, lift, and other specialist subcontractors to support compliance with LMG’s digital specifications and data requirements.
• Participate in and lead technical workshops with Main Contractors, MEP Consultants, Client IT teams, and cloud platform providers to align integration requirements, network security (IEC 62443), PKI trust chains, and software boundaries.
• Produce technical documentation, integration matrices, architectural diagrams, and other project deliverables to demonstrate system interfaces, data flows, and cross-system use cases E.g., occupancy-driven VAV control via lighting sensors).
• Provide guidance and support to Assistant Engineers on data verification workflows, testing requirements, and digital quality assurance procedures.
• Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation covering integration interfaces, data points, device registers, configuration requirements, and commissioning records.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Demonstrable knowledge of software development, data integration, APIs, and technical problem‑solving.
• Understanding of networking, communication protocols, and connected technologies relevant to smart buildings and IoT.
• Relevant certifications in software development, cloud platforms, networking, IoT, or smart building technologies.
• Experience or qualifications relating to building automation, BMS, data platforms, or systems integration.

Experience

• Practical experience in smart building systems, systems integration, commissioning, or a related technical environment.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and working with JSON schemas, RESTful APIs, and data payloads.
• Working knowledge of smart building protocols and data exchange mechanisms, including MQTT, MQTT over TLS, BACnet/IP, and BACnet/SC.
• Experience working with asset registers, naming standards (BDNS/Uniclass), and point schedules.
• Experience producing technical specifications, test procedures, commissioning documentation, and system integration documentation.
• Understanding of building ontologies and data standards, including UDMI, Brick Schema, and Project Haystack.
• Awareness of OT cybersecurity principles, including IEC 62443, PKI, and TLS certificate management.
• Experience installing, configuring, testing, or commissioning IoT sensors and associated connectivity technologies, including LoRaWAN and IoT network servers (LNS).
• Niagara 4 certification or relevant experience.
• Qualifications or practical experience in BMS, EMS, building controls, commissioning, HVAC, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
• Experience working with smart building platforms, data integration platforms, or Master Systems Integration (MSI) projects.
