A bit about us

Are you aVeterinary Surgeonseeking a unique and impactful role away from a public-facing environment? Join our dedicated team at Newbrook Animal Hospital, our flagship site near Birmingham, and make a real difference to animals most in need.

Thisfull-time (35 hours per week) fixed-term position involves working directly with RSPCA Inspectors, Animal Centre staff, and other charities to assess and rehabilitate animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. You'll provide essential veterinary care and advice, contributing to their journey towards adoption.

• Daily Shifts:On a rota basis; work seven-hour shifts, either from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM (day) or 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM (evening), with on-call duties for inpatients only with qualified nurses on site 24/7.
• On-Call & Weekend Rota:Participate in a 1:7 weekend rota, providing time off with the following Monday and Tuesday. This promotes a healthy work-life balance.

About Newbrook Animal Hospital (Birmingham):

Located in a charming rural setting amidst 70 acres of countryside, Newbrook Animal Hospital offers excellent motorway access, just a 20-minute drive from central Birmingham. Our friendly and enthusiastic team comprises 11 Veterinary Surgeons, 22 RVNs, and 9 veterinary care assistants. We are passionate about personal development and fostering a thriving, supportive environment. This includes daily 15-minute clinical vet rounds (Monday-Friday) for case discussions and a weekly 15-minute Hospital meeting for general updates. We are well-equipped with separate cat, dog and small furries wards and a wide range of modern equipment.

As part of this role you will also receive:

• Continuous Professional Development (CPD):5 days of CPD and a £1000 allowance (pro rata). Additional financial support is also available for relevant certificates and master's courses.
• Professional Fees:VDS and MRCVS registration fees are paid annually

Key responsibilities

• High Welfare & Clinical Standards:Prioritise the well-being of our animal patients.
• Consulting:Examine victims of cruelty and neglect from Inspectors and animals recovering at animal centres. Interesting and varied case load.
• Surgical Referrals:The Hospital accepts surgical referrals from RSPCA branches and Animal Centres across a wide geographical area.
• Surgical Procedures:Perform routine operations including neutering, dentals, amputations, cardiac ultrasounds and imaging, and eye enucleations.
• Cruelty Cases:Support RSPCA Inspectors with cruelty cases, a highly rewarding aspect of the job that requires report writing (full training and support provided).
• Administrative Tasks:Dedicated time for report writing, reporting lab results, and responding to clinical case queries.
• Mentorship & Support:Benefit from the guidance of many experienced vets and contribute to a collaborative team environment focused on growth and development and evidence based medicine. We have certificate holders and vets undertaking Masters courses in shelter medicine, animal behaviour and forensics.
• Team Collaboration:Work closely with various RSPCA teams, offering pragmatic guidance on rehoming decisions based on shelter medicine principles (e.g., icatcare / ISFM).
• Travel:Some travel to regional centres for veterinary care support and case work with Inspectors.
• Project Participation:Engage in critical initiatives such as trap, neuter, and release programs for feral cats, collaborating with partner charities. Support the RSPCA vet school and nurse school through training weeks for local school leavers, and contribute to ARO (Inspector) training.
