Job summary

We require a SLT Assistant to join our friendly department of SLT providing the speech and language therapy service to Hounslow Borough.

The post holder will support the qualified adult Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) team in the delivery of care and management of service provision in accordance with national and local priorities, organisational policies, procedures, and guidelines, including those from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). The role involves undertaking communication and dysphagia treatment plans under supervision, and providing feedback on relevant information. Main duties of the job

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will:

  • Clinical Skills
  • Devise and implement therapy programmes for adults based on assessed needs in liaison with the lead clinician.
  • Deliver communication therapy and education sessions across various settings, including patients' homes, clinics, and online.
  • Assess adult responses to therapy, determine progression, and provide advice on communication and swallowing difficulties.
  • Conduct dysphagia screening and follow-up checks.
  • Plan and run therapy groups independently within specialist areas.
  • Advise professionals and carers on managing communication difficulties.
  • Administer assessments within specialist areas, such as AAC, Parkinson's communication screening, and aphasia.

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • Essential: GCSE English Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Essential: Level 3 diploma in health and social care (or equivalent experience)
  • Desirable: Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (Assistant)
Experience and knowledge
  • Essential: Interest in adult neurological SLT, relevant client care experience, ability to handle distressing situations, knowledge of AAC through training
  • Desirable: Volunteer experience, community healthcare experience, participation in clinical excellence groups
Skills
  • Essential: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, teamwork, initiative, training in communication techniques, use of communication aids, attendance at clinical networks, ability to develop extensive skills in total communication, working towards SLTA competency frameworks
Other
  • Essential: Ability to travel, flexibility, strong communication and interpersonal skills, perceptual skills, tact and empathy in sensitive discussions
