Job summary

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 4 Sleep Nurse Associate to cover maternity leave for one year at the Great Western Hospital, with day-to-day work across GWH, West Swindon and Moredon Medical Centre.

The Sleep Nurse Associate will work under the Sleep Specialist Nurses to provide specialist nursing care, support, education and advice to patients and carers regarding CPAP/NIV therapy and sleep management.

Qualifications

• Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register.
• Experience with CPAP/NIV equipment and sleep investigations.
• Experience in sleep clinic or respiratory care preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and set up sleep recording equipment and CPAP/NIV therapy with supervision.
• Assess patient compliance and provide support to maximise therapy effectiveness.
• Maintain patient records and data bases.
• Provide knowledge and training to staff on CPAP/NIV management.
• Attend sleep reporting sessions with consultants when needed.

Sleep Nurse Associate

The closing date is 06 October 2026

This is a fixed term maternity cover for 12 months - ending September 2027.

We are seeking a Band 4 Sleep Nurse Associate to join our team within the Great Western Hospital to cover maternity leave for one year. Please note, youmust hold current NMC Nursing Associate registration.

You will be required to work across three site, GWH, West Swindon and Moredon Medical Centre.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to develop your clinical skills and knowledge within the Sleep Service.

The Sleep Nurse Associate will work under the direction of the Sleep Specialist Nurses, providing specialist nursing care, support, education and advice to patients, their carer and other health care professionals regarding management of their condition.

Main duties of the job

• With oversight prepare and set up new patients on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This involves patient assessment, explanation of Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and CPAP therapy, mask fitting, trial of CPAP equipment and downloading compliance data.
• With oversight prepare and assist in the setup of new patients up on Non-invasive ventilation, this also includes explanation into therapy, mask fitting and trial of NIV equipment and downloading Compliance data and taking appropriate action as necessary.
• To deal with clinical queries from new and long-term CPAP and NIV users over the telephone and by email.
• To provide Home sleep studies and oximetry on an outpatient basis.
• To Ensure simple fault remedy, cleaning, and maintenance of recording equipment within the service.
• To Download home sleep monitoring equipment and ensure cleaned and ready for next patient.

Job responsibilities

• To be able to prepare and set up the sleep recording equipment in the inpatient sleep room.
• To attend and assist in sleep reporting sessions with the consultant in the absence of the band 6 or 7.
• Assess patients compliance with treatment and utilise techniques to improve their compliance thus maximising effectiveness of therapy.
• Maintaining patient records and data bases.
• Provide professional and specialist Knowledge, advice, and training to medical and nursing staff where appropriate on management of patients requiring CPAP or Non-invasive ventilation.
• Inpatient visits for patients requiring NIV or mask issues.
• Take responsibility for, prioritise and manage own workload under appropriate direction.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Registered Nursing associate on the NMC register

Experience

• Evidence of continuing professional developemnet
• Experience of working in Respiratory medicine or acute ward
• Working as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to function as an effective team member
• Experience of working in a sleep clinic
• Experience of working in a sleep clinic
• Managing patients with problems (mask and machine)
