A newly established maritime transport company is seeking Boat Masters / Skippers to oversee ferry services in the Solent. Quay 2 Quay is a newly established maritime transport company providing ferry services in and around the Solent in the UK. Targeting routes that are some of the most popular in the UK the company is concentrating on passenger only vessel services providing scheduled crossings as well as tourist and private hire trips. The Quay 2 Quay concept has been put together by a team with experience in the provision of maritime services, business development and finance which provides a unique combination to take advantage of what they believe is a gap in the market.
Starting with a service between Lymington and Yarmouth the company intends to offer greater capacity and customer choice across the route together with an improved overall customer experience. This will be accomplished using a new state of the art boat with both enclosed and open passenger accommodation, together with the provision of onboard refreshments and an ‘all weather’ capability able to travel in all but the most severe weather conditions.
The Company is looking to hire Boat Masters / Skippers to assist with the provision of these services.
This role requires skilled Marine Operatives to join our dynamic team focused on the operation and management of its ferry services. The ideal candidates will have a strong maritime background and experience in vessel operation. You will be responsible for supporting the deployment of services, navigation, skippering, and ensuring safe and efficient operations. Key Responsibilities:
Operate and oversee the deployment, navigation of services.
Performing the duties of Skipper/ Boat Master to command and navigate the vessel.
Conduct pre-deployment checks, including equipment testing, weather assessment, and mission planning.
Monitor systems during services, ensuring optimal performance and addressing any operational issues.
Command and manage the boat’s crew, ensuring the safety of all persons and equipment.
Execute navigational tasks including route planning, hazard avoidance, and emergency procedures.
Maintain vessels in accordance with maritime regulations and company standards, ensuring seaworthiness and readiness for deployment.
Ensure all operations comply with maritime laws, environmental regulations, and company safety protocols.
Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies to safeguard crew, vessels, and the environment.
Provide clear and concise communication during operations, both to the crew and ground control station.
Minimum Requirements (MSN 1853 refers):
Boat Master License (BML) Tier 2 Level 2 which includes operation in Category D waters including the Solent, at the very least permitting carriage of passengers (up to 120 persons) between Lymington and Yarmouth.
BML Tier 1 Level 2 plus Special Endorsement for General Passenger Operations.
Suitable alternative qualifications (such as STCW Master, Chief Mate, OOW included CECs, Royal Navy STCW II/1 & II/2 and relevant fishing certification with a commitment to achieve the required equivalence (see MSN 1853).
Medical certification ENG1 or ML5 as appropriate.
GMDSS Short Range or Restricted Operators License or higher.
2 years experience in marine operations.
MCA approved training in:
Personal Survival
First Aid
Fire Safety
Or completion of the relevant MSQ units in lieu of the above 3 courses
Competence in navigation, seamanship, and maintenance.
Proficiency in operating marine navigation systems.
Ability to interpret weather reports, and technical manuals.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to pass background checks.
Desirable:
Experience with ferry operations or suitable equivalent.
Experience in small boat handling.
Location:Onsite - Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.
