Job description

An attractive opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a close and friendly team on a large private estate near Winchester where you will work in the principle garden (approx. 5 acres) as well as a small satellite garden (approx. 2 acres) locally.

The role would suit a practical and multi-skilled professional with excellent proactive time management abilities, the capacity to take direction and the desire to take on a varied role reporting to the Senior Gardener. This is a chance to secure a permanent and long-term position for the right candidate.

The gardens will consist of open lawns with newly planted trees, pleached limes, ornamental lawns, irrigation systems, woodland, ha-ha, fully stocked herbaceous borders, tennis court, pool garden, pergola walk, climbers, courtyard and outbuildings, greenhouse and small veg/cut garden.

Although largely based at this new site the candidate will be expected where required to work across the portfolio and should be mindful this would mean working within a 5 mile radius to cover the portfolio.

Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification e.g., RHS level 2 or 3 along with previous professional horticultural experience, preferably a private estate environment. Due to the nature of working in a private residence, adaptability along with professional working relationships is key.

The Skilled Gardener will take guidance in assuring health and safety regulations are complied with, physically fit with attention to detail while taking pride in their work to maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. Accountable and trustworthy, while being flexible in their approach to the job which includes varied tasks through the seasons and to assist the wider estate at short notice.

Candidates will ideally be natural problem solvers with a variety of gardening skills to fully contribute to the garden’s evolution. Should be autonomous when needed while being confident to share and apply knowledge while working as a team, when required to cover for colleague’s absence’s etc. Continued professional development will be encouraged by the estate.

Desirable, but not essential as training will be provided if required, to have tractor driving qualifications / experience, hold Chainsaw tickets i.e., Cross cut and Maintenance and PA1 & PA6 Chemical Handling certification. Experience and competence with a variety of gardening equipment including ride-on lawn mowers, hedge cutters, strimmer’s, leaf blower, associated powered equipment is essential. Due to its rural location a full driving license is a requirement, along with a willingness to drive other estate vehicles such as vans and trailers. Core working hours will be 40 hours per week Monday to Friday, with very occasional watering over weekend/holiday periods, if necessary, with TOIL.

The position requires employees to maintain a high level of discretion and to always be well presented. A uniform and PPE are provided, as is a warm and welcoming environment. This position is a way of life, so your positive and friendly attitude will be well received by those around you, whilst genuine reward realised in return for your skill and commitment to this attractive role. We appreciate applicants who come with a positive professional manner wanting to contribute to a excellent site atmosphere.
