Site Supervisor – Secondary School – Derby Marchant Recruitment Derby, England, United Kingdom

Site Supervisor – Secondary School – Derby

Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale

A well-established secondary school in Derby is looking to appoint a dependable and proactive Site Supervisor to take responsibility for the day-to-day operation, security and presentation of the school site.

This is a practical and varied position suited to someone who takes pride in maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the school's leadership and premises teams, ensuring that the buildings, grounds and facilities remain suitable for students, staff and visitors throughout the school day.

The role requires someone who is organised, practical and able to respond quickly when issues arise. While there will be routine responsibilities to manage, the successful candidate will also need to use initiative when dealing with unexpected maintenance, site or security issues.

School Information

This is a well-established secondary school in Derby serving students across Key Stages 3 and 4, with a strong focus on achievement, personal development and providing a positive environment in which young people can thrive.

The school places significant emphasis on ensuring that its buildings and facilities are safe, secure and fit for purpose. The premises team plays an important role in achieving this, supporting the school's wider commitment to providing a professional and welcoming environment.

The school has a busy site with a range of teaching spaces, offices, communal areas, outdoor areas and specialist facilities. The Site Supervisor will therefore need to be comfortable working across different parts of the school and managing a varied workload.

Staff across the school work collaboratively, and the successful candidate will have regular contact with teaching staff, support staff, contractors, visitors and senior leaders. Professional communication and a helpful attitude are therefore essential.

Premises and Site Team

The Site Supervisor will support the effective day-to-day management of the school premises. This includes monitoring the condition of buildings and grounds, responding to issues, supporting contractors and ensuring appropriate security arrangements are maintained.

You will need to be hands‑on and willing to assist with practical tasks while also maintaining accurate records and communicating issues appropriately. The successful candidate should understand that maintaining a school site is about more than simply completing maintenance tasks; it is about creating an environment where students and staff can learn and work safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the day-to-day management of the school site.
  • Ensuring school buildings and grounds are safe, secure and appropriately maintained.
  • Carrying out regular checks of the site.
  • Identifying maintenance issues and reporting or resolving them as appropriate.
  • Supporting minor repairs and practical maintenance tasks where appropriate.
  • Monitoring the general condition of classrooms, offices, corridors, communal areas and outdoor spaces.
  • Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
  • Supporting the security of the site and ensuring relevant procedures are followed.
  • Monitoring access to the premises and ensuring visitors follow school procedures.
  • Supporting contractors and ensuring appropriate access arrangements are in place.
  • Liaising with contractors when maintenance or servicing work is taking place.
  • Reporting larger repairs or specialist maintenance requirements to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Supporting statutory and routine maintenance arrangements.
  • Assisting with health and safety checks.
  • Maintaining appropriate records relating to premises issues and completed work.
  • Responding promptly to urgent site-related issues.
  • Supporting the preparation and organisation of rooms and spaces for school events.
  • Assisting with furniture and equipment movements when required.
  • Monitoring site cleanliness and reporting concerns to the relevant teams.
  • Supporting the wider premises team during particularly busy periods.
  • Ensuring tools, equipment and materials are stored appropriately.
  • Following school policies relating to health and safety, security and safeguarding.
  • Maintaining a professional and helpful approach when interacting with students, staff and visitors.

Experience and Requirements

The successful candidate should have previous experience in premises, facilities, site management, maintenance or a similar practical role. Experience working within a school or public-sector environment would be advantageous, although strong relevant experience from another setting will be considered.

A practical approach is essential, as is the ability to identify problems and take appropriate action. You should be comfortable carrying out routine checks and minor practical tasks while recognising when an issue requires specialist attention.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous premises, facilities, site or maintenance experience.
  • Strong practical skills.
  • Good understanding of site safety.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • A reliable and professional approach.
  • Confidence dealing with contractors and visitors.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to respond calmly to unexpected problems.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe school environment.
  • Basic IT skills for maintaining records and communicating with colleagues.
  • Flexibility when responding to the needs of a busy school site.

Safeguarding

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the safeguarding and security of the school environment. All site staff must follow the school's safeguarding, health and safety and visitor management procedures.

Appropriate pre-employment checks will be completed before the successful candidate starts work, including an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Application

If you are an experienced site or facilities professional looking for a permanent position within a busy secondary school, this role offers an excellent opportunity to become a key member of the premises team.

The school is looking to appoint a suitable candidate for an as soon as possible start.

This challenging and exciting opportunity requires an individual with a good technical background and demonstrable experience in taking the responsibility for overseeing engineering-based sites and...
