Job summary

ASCO Group Limited in Aberdeen seeks an experienced Operations Manager to lead and coordinate all daily activities across Aberdeen locations, ensuring safety, efficiency and regulatory compliance. You will supervise contractors, optimise resources and maintain high service standards for cargo, lifting and logistics operations.

You will promote a strong HSSEQ culture, manage performance, and drive continuous improvement while building effective relationships with customers and partners.

Job Purpose:

To lead and coordinate the safe, efficient and commercially effective delivery of operational activities across the Aberdeen operating locations, including Albert Quay, Mearns Quay and Torry Marine Base (Point Law Peninsula).

The role is accountable for providing day-to-day operational leadership and supervision, ensuring all activities, contractors and resources are planned, controlled and executed in compliance with company procedures, customer requirements and relevant legislation.

The role is responsible for maintaining high standards of Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ), promoting a positive safety culture and ensuring risks are effectively managed through the implementation and continuous improvement of safe systems of work.

The role supports the effective utilisation of people, equipment and facilities to optimise operational performance, productivity and customer satisfaction, while ensuring activities are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

The role develops and maintains effective relationships with customers, contractors, colleagues and other stakeholders, providing visible leadership, operational oversight and proactive problem-solving to support the operational and commercial success of the Aberdeen operation.

Operational Management
  • Provide visible operational leadership across allocated facilities and operational areas, ensuring activities are carried out safely, efficiently and in compliance with company procedures, customer requirements and legislative obligations.
  • Coordinate and supervise operational personnel, contractors, third parties and visitors, ensuring adherence to site rules, safe systems of work and operational standards.
  • Ensure the efficient management and dispatch of offshore returned cargo in line with customer requirements and agreed service level targets.
  • Maintain the integrity and effective use of operational systems, ensuring accurate and timely recording of operational data, documentation and performance information.
  • Oversee the resolution of cargo, customs and compliance-related issues to minimise operational disruption and maintain service standards.
  • Support the planning, coordination and utilisation of people, equipment and resources to achieve operational, commercial and customer objectives.
  • Ensure Permit to Work, lifting operations and associated activities are planned and executed in accordance with company procedures, risk assessments and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain oversight of traffic management arrangements, lifting equipment compliance and contractor-operated equipment to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Ensure operational data, activity records and performance metrics are accurately captured and reported to support operational and commercial performance.
  • Support the Base Manager and provide operational leadership and cover as required.
  • Promote and maintain a positive Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) culture through visible leadership, engagement and personal example.
  • Ensure safe systems of work are implemented, monitored and continuously improved to minimise risk and maintain compliance.
  • Lead, support and participate in safety initiatives, interventions, toolbox talks, safety briefings and workforce engagement activities.
  • Challenge unsafe acts, conditions and behaviours, ensuring appropriate intervention, reporting and corrective action.
  • Ensure risk assessments, procedures, work instructions and operational controls remain current, effective and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Lead initial incident response activities, supporting investigations, corrective actions and the completion of required reporting processes.
  • Ensure personnel have the information, instruction, training, competence and supervision required to perform their duties safely and effectively.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, PPE compliance and workplace safety across all operational areas.
  • Lead, supervise and support operational teams to deliver high levels of safety, performance, productivity and customer service.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance reviews, Return to Work discussions and other people management activities in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Support employee development by assessing competency, identifying training needs and promoting learning and professional growth.
  • Address performance, conduct and attendance concerns promptly, fairly and consistently.
  • Promote employee wellbeing and maintain an open, supportive and inclusive working environment.
Stakeholder and Customer Management
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, contractors, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate operational requirements, expectations and performance standards clearly and effectively.
  • Resolve operational issues and customer concerns in a timely and professional manner, escalating where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the delivery of customer service excellence and support the commercial success of the Aberdeen operation.
Compliance and Assurance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, company procedures and customer requirements.
  • Support verification, assurance and audit activities, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and closed out effectively.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, service delivery and cost effectiveness.
  • Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role, skills and competency level as required to support business needs.
General Responsibilities
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the role, consistent with individual training, competence and experience, to support the safe and effective delivery of operational activities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing business and operational requirements, providing support and cover as directed by the Base Manager.
  • Contribute positively to operational excellence, continuous improvement initiatives and the achievement of business objectives.
Essential Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Appointed Person (BS 7121).
  • IOSH Managing Safely certificate.
  • Knowledge and awareness of relevant health and safety legislation and regulations, including HASAWA, COSHH, LOLER and PUWER.
  • Training and experience in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques (e.g. TOP-SET).
  • Demonstrable operational management and supervisory experience within logistics, ports, marine, offshore supply base and/or energy industry environments.
  • Security Awareness Training.
  • Experience of managing contractors and third-party service providers.
  • Experience of implementing safe systems of work, risk assessments and Permit to Work processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience of leading teams, managing performance and promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Proficient in the use of operational management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
  • Counter Terrorism Awareness Training.
  • Oil Spill Awareness Training.
  • Incident Command and Incident Management Training.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Lean or Continuous Improvement Training.
  • Supervisory or management qualification.
  • Experience of quayside, cargo handling and lifting operations.
  • Knowledge of offshore logistics, marine operations and supply base activities.
  • Experience of customer relationship management within a service-led operational environment.
  • Internal auditor, compliance assurance or operational verification experience.
  • Additional HSSEQ qualifications and evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Experience in emergency response planning and business continuity activities.
  • Working knowledge of port, marine and offshore industry regulations and best practice.
