Job description

Site Reliability Engineer
Waterloo - Hybrid Working
Full Time
Permanent
Grade 4

At Currys we're united by one passion: to help everyone enjoy amazing technology. As one of the best-known retailers of tech, we're proud of the service our customers receive – and it's all down to our team of caring and committed colleagues. Join us and you'll work in a great team where you can be yourself and bring your personality. Working as one team, we learn and grow together, celebrating the big and small moments that make every day amazing.

As a Site Reliability Engineer you will apply software engineering practices to operations, owning the end-to-end availability, performance and resilience of our customer-facing and core trading services. You will work as part of a centralised SRE squad, embedding with product engineering teams to design reliability in from the start: defining service level objectives, automating away operational toil, and continuously improving how we build, deploy, observe and operate software at scale.

A core focus of this role is the design and build of our central AIOps platform: a shared capability that ingests telemetry, events and change data from across the estate and applies machine learning and AI-assisted automation to detect anomalies earlier, correlate and suppress alert noise, predict capacity and performance issues before they impact customers, and drive automated diagnosis and remediation of common failure modes. You will help shift Currys from reactive incident response towards predictive, self-healing operations.

This is an operations role first and foremost. However you will write production-quality code, treat infrastructure and operational tooling as software, and bring rigour to incident response, root cause analysis and the systematic elimination of repeat failures.

Role overview:
  • Reliability Engineering: Define, implement and report on SLIs, SLOs and error budgets with product squads, and use them to drive engineering prioritisation and release decisions.
  • AIOps platform: Design, build and operate Currys' central AIOps platform, covering telemetry ingestion and event correlation, ML-based anomaly detection and predictive alerting, intelligent alert routing and noise reduction, and automated runbook execution and remediation, integrated with our ITSM, incident and on-call tooling.
  • Observability: Build and evolve a modern observability stack (metrics, logs, traces and events) using open standards such as OpenTelemetry, ensuring services are instrumented, debuggable and measurable by default.
  • Automation: Eliminate operational toil through software: infrastructure as code, self-service tooling, CI/CD pipeline improvements and automated reliability testing, including chaos and resilience experiments.
  • Incident Response: Act as an escalation point for major incidents, lead blameless post-incident reviews, and drive root cause analysis through to permanent fixes, increasingly augmented by AI-assisted diagnosis from the AIOps platform.
  • Design for reliability: Review and challenge architecture and designs (HLD/LLD) to embed reliability, scalability, security and operability principles; set direction on strategic tooling and reduce duplication and technical debt.
  • Peak Readiness: Lead capacity planning and performance engineering for peak trading events (e.g. Black Friday), using predictive modelling from platform telemetry.
  • Engineering Culture: Coach product engineering teams in SRE and operational best practice, raising production standards across internal and third-party engineering functions, and participate in a 24x7 on-call rota.
Required Skills & Experience:

The successful candidate will have a strong software engineering background and be able to demonstrate sound judgement operating complex, high-traffic production systems. You will collaborate with engineers, product owners, service management and third‑party partners in the UK and overseas, so clear communication and strong stakeholder skills are essential. Experience in retail, e‑commerce, consumer goods or finance is valued.

  • Strong software engineering skills: proficiency in at least one modern language (e.g. Python, Go, PHP or Java), with experience writing, reviewing and operating production code.
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP valued), containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and Linux/Windows environments.
  • Deep observability and monitoring experience (e.g. OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic, Azure Monitor, PagerDuty), including designing SLIs/SLOs and alerting strategies.
  • Experience with AIOps capabilities such as anomaly detection, event correlation, predictive alerting or automated remediation, either building them or applying platforms.
  • Solid incident management experience in complex, fast‑paced IT environments, including post‑incident review and root cause analysis.
  • Applied ML/data engineering for operations: working with time‑series data, building or tuning anomaly detection models, or using LLMs/agents for operational tooling (e.g. AI‑assisted triage, runbook generation).
  • Experience working in agile product delivery, and influencing senior stakeholders on reliability investment.

Join our team and we'll be with you every step of the way, helping you develop the career you want with new opportunities, on‑going training and skills for life.

Not only can you shape your own future, but you can help take charge of ours too. As the biggest recycler and repairer of tech in the UK, we're in a position to make a real impact on people and the planet.
