About the role

The Site Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in transforming asset management at the Hull site into a high-performing and effective function. This position is responsible for developing and implementing the mechanical engineering strategy and ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations, including PSSR, PUWER, LOLER, DSEAR, and MCerts. The role will oversee activities such as life cycle engineering, energy performance, and the delivery of both OpEx and CapEx projects. It will support the projects function and maintain site mechanical standards, focusing on ageing plant and mechanical integrity. The engineer will drive asset management practices and manage Major Accident Hazard (MAH) scenarios involving ammonia, caustic soda, hydrogen, steam, and nitrogen. Collaboration with the Global Engineering Team to develop and align engineering standards is essential. Additionally, the role supports the site reliability program and contributes to daily maintenance operations to ensure optimal performance and equipment availability.

Responsibilities

  1. Champion and foster a strong safety culture, ensuring health and safety remain the top priority across all operations.
  2. Conduct and promote thorough risk assessments, proactively managing issues to ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.
  3. Contribute to the implementation of AAK Hull's Reliability Strategy within the engineering department.
  4. Drive the cultural shift of the maintenance team from reactive to proactive, fostering an inclusive and high-performance environment.
  5. Support and develop the mechanical maintenance team by providing necessary skills, resources, and guidance.
  6. Provide leadership and direction to Maintenance Technicians, encouraging ownership and high standards for mechanical assets.
  7. Deliver leadership for the mechanical engineering function, promoting governance, accountability, and excellence, with indirect support to Electrical Maintenance Technicians.
  8. Lead mechanical engineering best practices and continuous improvement projects to enhance maintenance quality and reliability.
  9. Facilitate collaboration among Engineering, Maintenance, Reliability, and site operations teams.
  10. Support departments including Safety, Quality, Food Safety, Environment, Production, and Projects.
  11. Engage with project teams early to incorporate mechanical standards and identify spare parts/instrumentation needs for procurement.
  12. Utilize and develop the company’s CMMS (Shire Systems) for performance tracking and process improvement.
  13. Identify project opportunities, collaborate with the projects team, and manage mechanical obsolescence and end-of-life equipment plans.
  14. Support preventive and predictive maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime and improve asset reliability metrics such as MTBF and MTTR.

About you

  1. HNC and/or degree-qualified in an engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience of 5-10 years.
  2. IOSH and/or NEBOSH certification is desirable.
  3. Member, or pursuing membership, of a recognized engineering institution.
  4. Experience in refinery and food manufacturing environments.
  5. Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  6. Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and ability to design and implement mechanical systems.
  7. Understanding of manufacturing safety practices, standards, and regulations.
  8. Experience in budget planning and financial management.
  9. Knowledge of plant operations and manufacturing facilities management.
  10. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and promote a positive work culture.
  11. Excellent communication skills for conveying complex information.
  12. Proficient in data analysis and reporting.
  13. Skilled in root cause analysis and problem-solving.
  14. Experience in troubleshooting mechanical systems and driving improvements.
  15. Understanding of reliability engineering concepts, including criticality analysis, MTBF, MTTR, and spare parts management.
  16. Able to develop innovative engineering solutions.
  17. Good knowledge of compliance regulations and industry standards.
  18. Previous hands-on mechanical engineering experience with leadership ambitions.
