Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is recruiting a Site Engineer for the A66 NTP Highways Scheme based in Penrith, Cumbria. You will lead site works, manage self-delivered and subcontracted tasks, and ensure quality and safety on site.

You will maintain records, read engineering drawings, supervise staff, and contribute to weekly programmes while coordinating with subcontractors and the wider project team.

Qualifications

  • Experience on highways projects and with a Tier 1 contractor.
  • Degree or HND/HNC in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card.
  • Ability to communicate safe systems of work clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain site diaries and records of works.
  • Carry out setting out and dimensional checks.
  • Prepare as-built drawings and maintain survey records.
  • Supervise graduate/trainee engineers and subcontractors.
  • Input weekly programme and monitor progress against plan.
  • Produce Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and briefings.
  • Carry out safety inspections and identify hazards.

Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a fantastic opportunity for a Site Engineer to join our team on the Highways A66 NTP Scheme, this role will be based at Penrith, Cumbria

Balfour Beatty Highways maintain, manage, and operate major highway networks across the UK and support local authorities creating communities where people want to live work and play.

We provide high quality asset strategy, management, and planning consultancy services to a wide range of public and private sector customers. We provide specialist, reliable, sustainable, and creative advice for asset management planning and implementation in the UK. We put our customers first and prioritise completing schemes safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

As a Site Engineer you will Lead and control a site works, according to a specific discipline, for both self delivered and subcontracted works.

What you'll be doing
  • Maintain comprehensive records of site works including detailed daily site diaries
  • Validation of allocation sheets
  • Carry out setting out and dimensional checks and understand limitations of instruments and surveying methods
  • Maintain survey records and produce as-built drawings
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks)
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety
  • Understanding of environmental issues (noise, dust, light, ecological etc), understanding of key regulations, and understanding of the project environmental management plan
  • Supervise graduate / trainee engineers
  • Manage specific site operations, including subcontractors
  • Input into weekly programme and produce short term schedules
  • Monitor construction activities for progress against programme
  • Production of Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessment and Task Briefing Sheets
  • Produce of Permit to Dig, including briefing to the workforce
  • Produce and brief daily activity briefings
  • Carries out onsite Safety Inspections and Hazard Identification
  • Contribute to the production of quality documentation, produce, complete and maintain records of check sheets
  • Ability to recognise and raise quality / workmanship issues
Who we're looking for
  • Highways projects experience
  • 2-3 years experience with a Tier 1 contractor
  • Obtained Degree, or HND/HNC qualification in either Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card
  • Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately
  • Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes
  • Able to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with level of responsibility

You will have the following:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of engineering and industry best practice
  • Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work.
  • Holds a current driving license and CSCS Card.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
  • An understanding of technical requirements and techniques of setting out and coaching of team members.
  • Strong knowledge of construction process in one or more of the following areas: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, Roadworks
  • Have a good working knowledge of current H&S Legislation
  • Have a full understanding of technical requirements and techniques of setting out and coaching of team members
  • Be an excellent team player, able to work competently and independently without continuous supervision
  • Possess strong communication skills with good interpersonal and influencing skills

Desirable:

  • Basic understanding of temporary works
  • Basic understanding of Utilities
  • Basic understanding of lifting operations
  • Working towards professional qualification
