Job summary

Careys Foundation in the Edinburgh area is seeking a Site Engineer to support the technical delivery of RC frame and groundworks projects. You will set out precisely, check levels and tolerances, and collaborate with Site Managers to keep work on programme and budget.

You will mentor Graduate and Apprentice engineers, review drawings, resolve RFIs, and maintain accurate as-built records while supporting quality checks on site.

Qualifications

  • Experience in setting out and surveying on concrete frame projects.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and transfer data to site teams.
  • Mentor Graduate/Apprentice engineers and guide on-site activities.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out accurate setting out using surveying equipment.
  • Check levels, dimensions and tolerances for build accuracy.
  • Support Senior Engineer in resolving technical queries and RFIs.
  • Review drawings, raise issues early to keep work buildable and compliant.
  • Work with Site Managers to plan and sequence works.
  • Provide clear construction information with sketches/markups.
  • Monitor progress and contribute to short-term planning.
  • Maintain as-built records and support digital deliverables.
  • Assist with take-offs and scheduling of key materials.
  • Complete temporary works inspections and assist simple temporary works designs.
  • Supervise Apprentice and Graduate Engineers; mentor teams.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers for safe, efficient delivery.

Description

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join a highly skilled team delivering projects across the Edinburgh region.

As a Site Engineer, you will support the technical delivery of these RC frame and groundworks projects. You will have a flair for technical complexity and detail, with a core motivation to engage with, innovate and inspire the teams around you. As an integral part of the operations team, your role will be key to the successful delivery of our projects.

Careys Engineers, work as part of a team interpreting engineering information and conveying this to the workforce, to ensure delivery of the project to programme and budget.

What you will be doing:
  • Carry out accurate setting out using a variety of surveying equipment.
  • Check levels, dimensions and tolerances to ensure work is completed correctly.
  • Support the Senior Engineer in resolving technical queries and RFIs.
  • Review drawings, raise issues early, and help ensure work is buildable and compliant.
  • Work closely with Site Managers and Supervisors to plan and sequence works.
  • Provide clear construction information to the workforce, including sketches and mark‐ups.
  • Monitor progress and provide input into short‑term planning.
  • Maintain accurate as‑built records and support digital deliverables.
  • Help prepare Inspection & Test Plans and carry out quality checks on site.
  • Identify issues early and support the resolution of non‑conformances.
  • Carry out material checks and ensure correct testing and sampling procedures.
  • Assist with take‑offs and scheduling of key materials such as drainage, reinforcement and waterbars.
  • Complete temporary works inspections and support simple temporary works designs.
  • Supervise Apprentice and Graduate Engineers, offering day‑to‑day guidance.
  • Work closely with subcontractors and suppliers to support safe and efficient delivery.
  • Build strong relationships internally and externally to keep information flowing.
What you will bring:
  • You will possess a qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or Structural Engineering to HNC level or above
  • A track record of delivering setting out and engineering processes on concrete frame projects.
  • Ability to use CAD software for data transfer to/from single person working kit EDM preferable
  • Highly competent in surveying and setting out techniques and able to teach others.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring Graduate and Apprentice engineers
