Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Site Construction Manager for the Bingally 400kV Substation Project, Inverness/Perth/Aberdeen area. You will lead the construction phase, representing SSEN Transmission on-site and coordinating with the contractor to deliver works safely, on time and to the required quality.

You’ll manage reporting, safety records and KPI tracking, while ensuring compliance with CDM, planning consents and contractual requirements.

Qualifications

  • Experience on-site construction and commissioning of High Voltage Substations or similar major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing multiple contractors to drive construction activities to time and budget, with quality requirements and ITPs.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM regulations and safety leadership on large-site projects.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel to site; on-site presence five days a week.

  • Oversee construction phase on-site and ensure works are delivered safely and in line with SSEN processes and Works Information.
  • Provide weekly/monthly reports to Project Manager and maintain safety, quality and testing records (ITPs, KPIs).
  • Coordinate with contractor and SSEN Operations to meet the programme and resource needs, developing a collaborative safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with planning consents, SHE legislation, and contractual obligations; manage stakeholder engagement.
  • Document site progress with records and photographs as directed.

Job description

Base Location: Inverness, Perth, Aberdeen - Once the construction phase begins, you’ll be expected to work on-site at the Bingally 400kV Substation Project site area near Fasnakyle/Cannich, five days per week.

Salary: £44,000 - £65,900 depending on experience + car / cash allowance + performance-related bonus + range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

The Role

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Site Construction Manager experienced in the principles of the construction and commissioning of major transmission substations.

You’ll be joining the project before Gate 3 of the LCP process and take responsibility for the construction phase, ensuring suppliers carry out works in accordance with SSEN processes, procedures, and contracted Works Information. You will represent the SSEN Transmission business on-site, being one of the key points of contact for the project.

You will:
  • Work closely with the appointed contractor and the operations team to ensure the works are delivered, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, including bulk earthworks, civils construction, building construction, air-insulated switchgear installation, transformer installation, earthing, building supplies, busbar installation and commissioning activities.
  • Interact proactively with the appointed contractor(s) and SSEN Operations team to ensure the works are delivered to the project programme, with appropriate resource levels and develop and maintain a positive and collaborative safety culture and community on site.
  • Provide weekly and monthly reports to the Project Manager and ensure that the Contractor submits sufficiently detailed weekly reporting as part of the project deliverables. This includes maintaining records related to safety, quality, and on-site testing, such as Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and other relevant documentation.
  • Ensure the project is executed in accordance with relevant requirements, particularly statutory and legal obligations, health & safety, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, quality & technical compliance and internal & external stakeholder management.
  • Ensure site activities comply with planning consents and SHE legislation and the design, and ensure routine reports and KPIs are submitted. Keep comprehensive records and photographs documenting site progress and activities, to be prepared and submitted as directed by the Project Manager.
You have:
  • Previous experience working on-site on the construction and commissioning of High Voltage Substations or other similar large infrastructure construction projects. Including experience working with multiple Contractors/Sub Contractors to drive construction activities to time and budget and an understanding of quality requirements with experience in monitoring inspection and test plans.
  • A strong engineering and construction knowledge including safety and CDM regulations ideally within a substation construction environment and you must hold SMSTS 5-day site management qualification or equivalent and have experience in site management of similarly complex works in construction / utilities / electrical installation & commissioning, and ideally be HND qualified in engineering or construction management (or equivalent).
  • Effective leadership in challenging environments and ability to cope with conflicting demands, and have excellent planning, organising and communication skills including being competent in the use of IT (Word, Excel, ACC/BIM etc). You will be capable of challenging others, resolving conflicts and planning site activities.
  • An understanding of NEC contracts, with previous experience fulfilling the role of NEC Supervisor.

The role requires a full current driving licence due to the requirement to travel to and be on site and during the construction phase you will be expected to be on site 5 days/week.
