Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Surgery Directorate at St Thomas’s Hospital for a 12-month secondment Band 7 Ward Manager to provide clinical leadership and management on our Plastic Surgery Ward.

We are looking for a dynamic, patient-centred, enthusiastic, and hardworking individual who has substantial surgical experience, ideally with experience in plastic surgery to support and lead the ward team.

Somerset ward is a 16-bedded unit caring for patients undergoing a range of plastic surgery procedures, through elective and emergency pathways.

The secondment offers an opportunity to develop management skills with support from Surgery’s senior leadership team.

Applicants should be available to start immediately, within 4 weeks of the interview date, and must have approval from their current line manager to apply.

Informal visits are recommended; details are below to arrange a visit.

Main duties of the job

Provide strong leadership, high visibility, and accessibility to enable the unit to deliver excellence in nursing, ensure high-quality patient experience, and aim to reduce length of stay.

Work on the ward, facing opportunities and challenges that will develop your skills and nursing perspective. Opportunities for further self-development through courses are available, with support from the senior nursing team, practice development team, and specialist nurses.

Collaborate closely with the head of nursing, matron, medical colleagues, and a multidisciplinary team to establish and deliver patient-specific pathways, adopting innovative care models.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Lead the ward/team, build effective multidisciplinary links, and support high-quality clinical care and patient experience.

Manage nursing staff, ensure safe practice, and adhere to professional standards and the NMC code.

Communicate effectively within the team, act as a professional role model, and develop clinical competence.

Optimize use of resources, monitor budgets, and ensure adequate equipment and supplies.

Maintain effective communication channels and participate in research and audit activities.

Ensure safety, advocate for patients, and lead change initiatives.

Deputise for the Matron as needed and be responsible for medication and blood product administration.

Assess emergencies, interpret information, and lead responses.
