Sister/Charge Nurse Intensive Care Unit

Join us at an exciting time for the Intensive Care Unit, Royal United Hospital Bath. We have an ambitious plan for our journey to Outstanding and are looking for inspirational, committed individuals to join us, making a real difference to both our staff and patients.

The ICU team are dedicated to providing care for critically ill patients from across a range of medical and surgical specialties. We have recently moved into our brand-new purpose-built, state of the art unit with ceiling mounted pendants, positive and negative pressure side rooms which maximises safety for staff and patients and have an excellent development programme for all staff that work within ICU.

As Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will work clinically within the multidisciplinary team, maintain high standards of practice while supporting staff on a shift by shift basic and provide clinical leadership and decision making.

You need to be an enthusiastic and integral member of our established and committed team, and provide and supervise the delivery of excellent patient care. In this role you will provide effective clinical leadership and management of the team in the Intensive Care Unit and demonstrate the ability to manage your time by prioritising and organising your working.

We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate current personal development; have a good understanding and involvement in improving patient safety, risk reduction and development of others and general support for peers, junior and senior colleagues.

Main duties of the job

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:

  • The post holder is responsible for the assessment, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for critically ill adults in their care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team. They will act as an effective clinical role model.
  • The Post holder will use specialist knowledge obtained through relevant post registration courses in caring for critically ill adults.
  • To maintain a safe clinical environment conducive to patient care.
  • Develop leadership skills and experience in the management within the Intensive Care Unit
  • To promote and participate in the implementation of the RUH Nursing strategy:
  • Developing and implementing Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives.
  • Reviewing nursing practice and implementing appropriate changes based on research/best practice.
  • Participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate, and to teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to nursing or non-nursing staff

To be designated to manage the Intensive Care Unit and/or act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility. To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the ward/department.

Qualifications
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Evidence of significant post registration study specifically related to Intensive Care
  • egistered nurse with extensive critical care nursing experience
  • Evidence of completion of Step1,2 and 3 national competency framework for adult critical care nurses
  • Management and leadership training
  • ILS/ALS certification
  • Paediatric critical care qualification and clinical experience or willingness to undertake relevant study.
  • Completion of Step 4 national competency framework for adult critical care nurses.
Skills
  • Significant experience within critical care setting.
  • Demonstrates an insight into management issues
  • Demonstrates experience of taking charge and delegating duties within the speciality
  • Demonstrate an insight into management issues e.g. management of change, conflict
  • Understanding of the basic principles of effective budgetary management.
