Job description

Advert - Complex Spine Fellow - Neurosurgery

We are currently recruiting for (1) post at Senior Clinical Fellow (ST8 or post-CCT Equivalent) in Neurosurgery for a twelve month period. The candidate will be working in a Royal College of Surgeons approved Fellowship: The Sir Hugh Cairns Complex Spinal Surgery Fellow involving experience in both neurosurgery and orthopaedic spinal disciplines. Successful applicants will be supported in their broader professional and career development, particularly with reference to CCT and CESR. This would be a good opportunity for the post-holder to develop subspecialist skills in complex spine surgery in preparation for application to consultant posts.

This position will be available from August 2025.

Main duties of the job

The post is at Senior Clinical Fellow (Post CCT or ST8 Equivalent) in Neurosurgery for a six month period in the first instance, although longer appointments can be arranged for the successful candidate following a suitable trial period. There is a dedicated in-house consultant led neurosurgical teaching programme, and successful applicants will be supported in their broader professional and career development, particularly with reference to CCT and CESR.

The successful candidate must be GMC registered with a license to practice and prior experience in Neurosurgery or a related discipline (Neurology/Acute Medicine/Critical Care) is essential.

The Neurology and The Neurosurgery Departments of Barts Health NHS Trust are sited at The Royal London Hospital and the post holder will be based at The Royal London Hospital.

There is a complex spine consultant of the week 1 in 9 rota for all spinal trauma, metastatic spinal cord compression, complex spinal infection and acute degenerative spinal pathology requiring instrumentation.

We have a dedicated Neuro-Trauma Team as a supra-specialist service (the first in the UK) which is Consultant delivered on a 1 in 4 rota and supported by three full time Clinical Nurse Specialists. There will be the opportunity to work closely with the Neuro-Trauma Consultants, the CNS, ACCU, ED and Rehabilitation Services.
