A major NHS teaching trust in London is seeking an ST1/2 junior doctor to join a busy department at Northwick Park Hospital. The successful applicant will provide essential clinical care, supporting consultants in managing both elective and emergency gynaecological cases. This role allows for professional development in a supportive environment, managing diverse high-risk patients and participation in multidisciplinary team efforts. The opportunity also includes learning and procedural skill enhancement, making it ideal for those looking to advance their clinical careers.
This post is for an ST1/2 junior doctor based at Northwick Park Hospital.
The appointee will undertake all aspects of clinical care within a busy department, supporting consultants in managing gynaecological elective and emergency workload. The department offers a wide variety of clinical caseloads in a supportive environment.
Following the closure of the maternity unit at Ealing, obstetric workload is now based at Northwick Park, primarily involving high-risk patients with diverse medical conditions. The department handles approximately 6,000 bookings and around 5,000 deliveries annually. There are specialized clinics for diabetes, maternal medicine, hematological conditions, and multiple pregnancies. The labour ward features 98 hours of consultant presence and additional on-call cover, separate from gynaecology consultant cover. Ante-natal clinics are held at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex. The department includes a high-risk delivery suite with dedicated theatres, HDU, triage, observation bay, and recovery unit. There is a midwifery-led ward for low-risk women and water births.
The emergency gynaecology workload has increased following reconfiguration of Emergency Departments across North West London, with an emergency gynae/early pregnancy unit at Northwick Park and an early pregnancy unit at Ealing Hospital. Cases such as acute pelvic sepsis are common, providing valuable experience in emergency management.
Ealing Hospital offers clinics, gynaecology theatres, day case, and inpatient wards. Northwick Park Hospital is a busy acute hospital with a purpose-built maternity unit, including delivery suite, obstetric HDU, inpatient facilities, day assessment, and clinics. The hospital also has a level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Gynaecology inpatient and theatre facilities are within the main hospital.
The rota is Band 1a and compliant with EWTD. In clinics, the ST1/2 role is supplementary to service needs, with new patients allocated and supervised as part of training. In theatre, the role is educational, with opportunities to assist and learn procedures. Career grades are encouraged to develop procedural skills, and GP VTS trainees will be supported to learn about patient management post-referral.
On Labour Ward, ST1/2s will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing care for women in labour, as well as on antenatal, postnatal, and day care wards.
