What we’re looking for

  • This job advert is for the role of a Ship Structural Specialist working with liquefied gas membrane containment systems, as part of LR’s Global Technical Support Office. The successful candidate will be mainly based at our Southampton office, with a flexible work arrangement of home and office work.
  • You will be part of a global team supporting growth in this area, working on various new-build and existing ship projects worldwide. Your responsibilities include supporting clients and surveyors through design appraisal, support work, and technical query resolution.

  • This position is for a Specialist level, with the possibility of a Senior Specialist role depending on experience.

The role

  • Serving as a technical member of the Specialized Ship Structures team, conducting design appraisal, calculations, and consultancy in accordance with Class Rules and statutory codes. The focus will be on LNG membrane containment systems, with potential involvement in other gas systems (e.g., Ammonia, Hydrogen) and ship types.
  • Providing innovative solutions for structural challenges through calculations and application of LR’s Rules, regulations, and international standards.
  • Offering technical advice to global clients, including designers, shipyards, LR surveyors, and specialists.
  • Participating in Technology and Rule Development Projects to keep rules current with industry innovations.
  • Assisting in project bids by estimating time requirements.
  • Managing plan approval projects, tracking progress, and ensuring compliance with budgets and contracts.
  • Fostering client satisfaction and exploring new business opportunities.
  • Other duties may be assigned by team leads or managers.

What you bring

  • A degree in naval architecture, structural or mechanical engineering, or an equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Experience in ship structural design, including fatigue calculations, and applying Class Rules to liquid gas containment systems. Familiarity with LR’s Gas Ship Rules, Gas Fuelled Ship Rules, and IMO IGC/IGF Codes is preferred.
  • Experience in shipyards or with ship-owners is desirable.
  • Knowledge of regulatory bodies (LR, IACS, IMO, flag states, EU) and their operations.
  • Understanding of liquefied gas ships' structural features and containment systems.
  • Basic knowledge of sloshing effects and structural resilience.
  • Understanding of liquefied gas ship operations, including loading and unloading.
  • Membership in a relevant professional institution.
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in English, with the ability to produce detailed technical reports.
  • An understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society and the interface with statutory regulations.
