Shift Operation Technician

  • Location: Croydon (CR0 4TD)
  • Timetable: Flexible on time - organise with Hiring Manager.
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Start: June/July 2025
  • Salary: £50,000 per year, and participation in an annual bonus scheme, in addition to our great range of benefits. (£4900 London fee)
  • MUST HAVE WORK RIGHTS FOR THE UK. The Shift Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the plant from within a central control room and out in the field on a 24hour shift rotation.
    As part of a team, your duties will include plant and equipment process changes to optimise process performance within health, safety and environmental compliance. The role involves process and equipment fault diagnosis and rectification, system isolations, ensuring compliance with safe system of work always.
    Full accountability to take all reasonable steps to prevent any event that could cause health, safety or environmental harm. Full authority to contact any Leadership Management (LMM) member on a pressing health, safety and environmental matter.
    • DCS operation and alarm management (to include a regular review and reporting of standing and nuisance alarms).
    • Safe operation of the plant withing Environmental Permit Limitations.
    • Safe operation of the plant to achieve set KPIs, maximising waste throughput and electrical export.
    • Continuous personal development within the organisation to unlock career potential and attend training courses as required.
    • Qualify as an Authorised Person under the Safety rules and work towards qualification as a Senior Authorised Person.
    • Diagnose and rectify plant faults through trend monitoring and analysis.
    • Operation and monitoring of the boiler water chemistry.
    • Carry out routine tasks and testing of plant equipment. Update the shift log including plant and process changes, diligent shift handover to ensure effective communication to the following shift.
    • Monitor consumable stock levels and supervise bulk deliveries and loading.
    • Direction of people on outside plant and communication i.e. dealing with telephone calls in accordance with the procedure.
    • Assist with all shutdown activities within the plant, ensuring plant downtime is minimised, also carry out front line maintenance to ensure plant availability is maintained
    • Safe and efficient operation of the plant during steady state, start-up, shutdown and emergency situations as directed by the Shift Team Leader (STL).
    • Monitor and operate the Control Room SCADA system as directed by the STL and ensure an accurate log of events is maintained.
    • Ensure all pertinent operational information is clearly communicated to the oncoming shift team via a shift handover.
    • Work within the company's Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System and all relevant legislation.
    • Ensure that all defect reporting within CMMS is effective and followed through to completion promptly and that PPM's are completed as required.
    • Ensure that all activities within the plant are carried out in a safe manner in line with safety policy and all HSE requirements.
    • Comply with all PPE requirements including COSHH chemical handling.
    • Report any potential safety issues and control any hazards as required.
    • Carry out risk assessments to ensure activities are always completed in a safe manner.
    • Work as part of a team striving for continual improvement in minimising Health & Safety risks at the plant.
    • Ensure visitors on site are inducted in the site safety and emergency procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with the PPC Permit at all times.
    • Record and report any impacts or potential impacts on the environment to the Shift Team Leader.
  • Skills and qualifications:
    • Mechanical/electrical/process plant experience (Process or power plant experience)
    • Experience of managing a process controlled by a PPC Permit or equivalent. Numeracy and literacy.
    • Safety qualification, preferably IOSH or NEBOSH.
    • Understanding of safe systems of work i.e. plant isolations and safety systems.
    • Understanding of HSE legislation relevant to similar plants.
    • Computerised Maintenance Management Systems.
    • Computer literate.
    • Ability to think logically and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
