Job summary

Fairmont Southampton is seeking a Shift Building Operator - Plant Engineer to manage safe and efficient operation and maintenance of hotel plant systems. You will monitor boilers, chillers, HVAC, pumps, and water treatment while ensuring energy efficiency and reliability to support continuous resort operations.

The role requires 2–3 years in plant operations, strong troubleshooting skills, and experience with BAS and maintenance tracking tools.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in plant operations, building engineering, or a similar role.
  • Experience operating central plant systems such as boilers, chillers, and pumps.
  • Proven ability to respond effectively to system alarms, failures, and emergencies.
  • Experience using Building Automation Systems (BAS) and work order systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections and monitoring of central plant equipment and building systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot plant systems including boilers, chillers, HVAC, pumps.

We invite you to join the world of luxury hospitality at Fairmont Southampton as our new Shift Building Operator - Plant Engineer. Reporting to the Director, Engineering & Facility Operations, the Shift Building Operator – Plant Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the hotel’s plants and associated building systems.

This role ensures that all critical infrastructure, including steam boilers, chillers, potable, waste & salt water systems, and mechanical plant equipment operates reliably and efficiently to support uninterrupted resort operations. The Plant Engineer plays a key role in preventative & reactive maintenance, system optimization, and emergency response while supporting the broader Engineering team in maintaining overall building performance.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections and monitoring of central plant equipment and building systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot plant systems including:
    • Boilers, chillers, HVAC systems and pumps
    • Emergency generator systems Reverse Osmosis water treatment, wastewater, and water transfer systems
  • Monitor and maintain system performance through Building Automation Systems (BAS) and respond to alarms and faults.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure system reliability and efficiency.
  • Diagnose issues and complete timely repairs.
  • Support maintenance of plumbing and general building systems as required.
  • Use O&M manuals, schematics, and technical drawings to ensure safe and effective operations.

Inventory & System Management

  • Maintain accurate logs of plant readings (e.g., water, gas, electrical usage) and system performance.
  • Utilize the Transcendent work order system to plan, track, and document maintenance activities to clearly articulate written details on work orders and submit all documentation promptly as per established deadlines.
  • Monitor system efficiency and identify opportunities for energy savings and operational improvements.
  • Maintain inventory of critical spare parts, tools, and consumables.
  • Coordinate with contractors and service providers for maintenance and repairs.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, operating procedures, and hotel policies.
  • Follow and enforce safety protocols including lockout/tagout and confined space procedures.
  • Respond to plant-related emergencies including system failures, alarms, and power outages.
  • Support fire and life safety systems response in coordination with Security and Engineering teams.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized plant rooms and mechanical spaces.

Guest & Team Support

  • Maintain 24/7/365 day per year services coverage by ensuring continuous operation of critical infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and other departments to maintain hotel standards and operational excellence.
  • Provide timely response to maintenance issues impacting guest comfort.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in plant and back-of-house areas.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support overall building operations.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in plant operations, building engineering, or a similar role, preferably in a hotel, resort, or commercial environment.
  • Experience operating and maintaining central plant systems such as boilers, chillers, and pumps.
  • Proven ability to respond effectively to system alarms, failures, and emergencies.
  • Experience using Building Automation Systems (BAS) and work order systems preferred.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant technical certification required (e.g., Power Engineering, HVAC, Mechanical, or similar).
  • Additional trade certifications (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) are an asset but not required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Understanding of HVAC systems, water treatment processes, and power generation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures (lockout/tagout, confined space, WHMIS, CPR/first aid).
  • Proficiency in using BAS systems and maintenance tracking tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members where required.

Circumstances

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Must be available for after-hours emergency response.
  • Ability to work in plant rooms, mechanical spaces, confined spaces, and varying temperature conditions.
  • Physically capable of lifting, carrying, and working with maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
  • Must be able to perform in a fast-paced environment to ensure response and rectification requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to complete training courses promptly.
