Jobtailor in the United Kingdom seeks a senior SHEQ leader to drive health, safety, environmental and quality assurance across major construction projects. You will embed policies, deliver independent assurance, and ensure compliance with CDM and ISO standards.

Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Chartered IOSH status or progress toward chartered is expected.
  • Experience leading SHEQ on major construction/infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of UK health, safety, environment and quality legislation.

Job description

  • Lead the project SHEQ function and provide independent assurance that the project is planned and delivered safely, responsibly and to required quality standards
  • Translate Zero Harm commitments and management systems into effective project controls
  • Advise the Project Director/Manager and report functionally to the Head of HSSEQ
  • Provide visible leadership across work areas and engage with the workforce and supply chain
  • Coach managers and supervisors so SHEQ ownership remains within operational leadership
  • Lead project SHEQ meetings, contribute to project reviews and elevate material risks
  • Maintain the project SHEQ plan, legal and client compliance arrangements, risk profile and assurance schedule
  • Embed SHEQ requirements into design, construction planning, procurement, mobilisation and change control
  • Review RAMS, construction controls, environmental plans, inspection and test plans, permits and task briefings
  • Monitor compliance with legislation, client standards, consents, licences, procedures and ISO management systems
  • Develop and deliver risk-based inspections, audits, leadership engagements and supply-chain assurance
  • Maintain SHEQ data and dashboards, validate indicators, identify trends and present performance reports
  • Ensure corrective actions are owned, proportionate and closed by agreed dates
  • Verify competence, induction, authorisation and assessment arrangements for safety- and quality-critical work
  • Support internal, client and certification audits and retain evidence of compliance
  • Ensure incidents, close calls, environmental events, defects and non-conformances are reported, controlled and investigated
  • Lead or support investigations, identify underlying causes and track learning actions
  • Coordinate notifications and communications with leadership, clients and regulators
  • Drive practical improvements and verify lessons learned are embedded
  • Oversee environmental controls, quality planning, material assurance, inspections, defect prevention and handover readiness
  • Assure subcontractor performance and intervene when standards or critical controls are not met
  • Assure high-risk civil and structural activities, electrical installation interfaces, permits, isolations, lifting, temporary works, commissioning and energisation
  • Lead SHEQ readiness reviews at phase transitions and formally hand over residual risks and actions
Requirements
  • NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent recognised professional qualification
  • Chartered Member of IOSH, or demonstrable progress toward chartered status
  • Strong experience leading SHEQ delivery on major construction, utilities, power transmission or high-voltage infrastructure projects
  • Working knowledge of UK health and safety, environmental and quality legislation and practical application of CDM Regulations
  • Practical experience of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 systems, audit and assurance
  • Competence in incident investigation and root-cause analysis
  • Experience managing and assuring principal contractors, subcontractors and geographically or technically complex work fronts
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel within the project footprint
  • Recognised lead-investigator qualification is desirable
  • Credible leadership and ability to influence senior managers, supervisors, specialists and frontline teams
  • Ability to challenge, intervene and escalat e constructively
  • Commercial awareness and ability to integrate SHEQ requirements into delivery
  • Strong written reporting, investigation, presentation and action-management skills
  • Calm and decisive during incidents and changing project conditions
  • Collaborative, fair and curious approach with commitment to learning and continuous improvement
