Role Overview

We are seeking a proactive Service Protection Engineer to support utility assurance activities across EDNUP and the ISA. In this role, you'll ensure that works around utilities are safely planned and executed, using technologies such as EML and GPR to identify and mark underground services, enforce exclusion zones, and issue permits to dig in line with site processes.

You'll coordinate utility mapping efforts, conduct risk assessments, and contribute to hazard mitigation strategies. The role also involves regulatory compliance, stakeholder collaboration, and the integration of new technologies into utility protection plans—including supporting training and continuous improvement initiatives.

Ideal candidates will have a utility surveying background and AutoCAD experience, with a passion for safety, innovation, and teamwork in complex infrastructure environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work in the capacity of a Service Protection Engineer completing assurance activities to ensure that works undertaken around utilities are planned and executed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • The engineer will be working with EML and GPR technologies to mark up all existing utilities in areas of excavation to an approved site colour scheme and clearly mark and uphold utility exclusion zones.
  • Applicants with a utility surveying background and AutoCAD experience will be prioritised.
  • The engineer will also be expected to produce, issue and brief permits to dig in line with a site process.
  • This role will support projects across EDNUP and the ISA and report to the ISA Service Protection Manager Coordinating utility identification and mapping efforts, conducting risk assessments, and developing plans for mitigating potential hazards.
  • The engineer is responsible for regulatory compliance, collaboration with stakeholders, and obtaining necessary permits and supporting the integration of new technologies. This involves coordinating GPR surveys, integrating technology into utility protection plans, and providing training on new tools.
  • The Service Protection engineer will contribute to continuous improvement by updating plans, conducting pilot tests for emerging technologies, and fostering collaboration within and beyond the organisation. They are also involved in performance monitoring, team development, and effective communication, ensuring that utility protection efforts meet established standards and contribute to a culture of safety and excellence.

Essential Qualifications And Experience

  • NVQ level 3 in utility mapping minimum (level 5 preferred)
  • Working Knowledge of HSG47
  • Understands PAS128 terminology
  • Basic CAD skills but not essential
  • Works well in a team
  • Good time management skills
  • Previous experience in utility surveying preferable
  • Good problem-solving skills
