Job description

Location: On-site working at our state of the art labs in Bristol, UK.

Start Date: July 2025.

Eligibility: Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK to apply for this role.

Who We Are

GenomeKey is a Bristol based biotech startup developing a next-generation diagnostic device for bloodstream infections, using machine learning and DNA sequencing.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a proactive and highly competent Sequencing Automation Scientist to oversee sequencing workflows in our laboratory. This is a hands-on, lab-based role working across microbiology, automation, and sequencing. You will be the go-to expert for executing and optimising the sequencing process, from sample receipt through to data generation, ensuring the lab runs efficiently and effectively.

You will work closely with lab technicians and Scientists, take ownership of robotic automation workflows, and troubleshoot end-to-end processes. This role is ideal for someone with experience in high-throughput environments (e.g., Lighthouse Labs) who thrives on precision, consistency, and getting things done.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Process Ownership & Execution: Run and maintain sequencing workflows end-to-end, including Nanopore library preparation and flow cell loading, with support from Lab Technicians.
  • Automation & Robotics: Design, implement, and troubleshoot automated workflows using liquid handling platforms (e.g., OpenTrons); maintain code in Python.
  • Troubleshooting: Perform root-cause analysis of process failures; escalate major technical issues; implement corrective actions.
  • Collaboration: Oversee and guide lab technicians performing SOP-driven processes; provide training and feedback where required.
  • Process Optimisation: Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying process bottlenecks and implementing changes to improve quality, speed, and reliability.
  • Data Tracking & Documentation: Ensure accurate tracking of samples, reagents, and workflows via lab information systems; contribute to SOP development and refinement.
  • Cross-functional: Collaborate with Engineering, Science and Computer Science teams as part of broader company-wide initiatives, and work through blockers.

Who You Are

You thrive in the lab, enjoy running smooth, efficient workflows, and quickly solve problems when they arise. Detail-oriented and hands-on, you’re confident working independently and as part of a team. With experience in high-throughput or diagnostic labs, you balance precision with pace.

Qualifications & Experience

We are open to varied backgrounds for this role but expect candidates to meet most of the following skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Either PhD in a scientific discipline such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related field, or MSc/BSc in a related field with relevant industry experience.
  • Significant experience with sequencing workflows, sample preparation and bacterial culturing.
  • Industry experience in a molecular or microbiology lab, ideally within a high-throughput environment.
  • Hands-on experience with robotic liquid handling platforms and running automated workflows.
  • Familiarity with basic scripting (e.g. Python) to modify or write simple robotic protocols.
  • Ability to troubleshoot processes, equipment, and automation systems.
  • Comfortable operating to SOPs and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal.

Desirable

  • Experience using or maintaining OpenTrons or similar low-cost liquid handlers.
  • Experience with LIMS/tracking systems.
  • Prior involvement in Lighthouse Lab or similar high-volume diagnostic setting.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 or other quality management systems.
  • Proficiency with basic scripting (e.g. Python) to modify or write simple robotic protocols.

Our Hiring Process

  • Intro call with hiring manager (20 minutes)
  • Take-home task
  • Role-fit interview (60 minutes)
  • Final stage (45 minutes)
