Job Description:

Role purpose and overview

Organic traffic is key to the success of our product-led content to convert readers into shoppers across multiple verticals. We are looking for an enthusiastic self-starter who understands the important role search engines and publishers play in the user journey of online shoppers.

As an SEO Manager within Commerce, you will support the Senior SEO Manager in administering our SEO strategy for multiple areas of Commerce (including, but not limited to, Sports, Travel, Betting, Affiliates, and Finance) and report on the performance of live initiatives. Our product-led content primarily resides within various verticals.

The SEO team is a central resource across the Commerce business, providing support, insight, and expertise in digital marketing. You will work closely with verticals and business units, including Affiliate Partnerships, Travel, Editorial, and Product teams.

Key responsibilities

Content Management

  • Collaborate with vertical leads to develop a product-led SEO & content strategy aimed at increasing revenue, traffic, and rankings.
  • Present this strategy as a clear roadmap to senior stakeholders.
  • Conduct keyword research for new or existing topics with affiliate or lead generation revenue potential.
  • Create clear briefs in a formulaic style for writers with varying SEO knowledge, review articles, and suggest optimizations to ensure search success.
  • Coordinate with Editorial teams to plan seasonal content for high-traffic search queries, communicating rationale and prioritizing workflows.
  • Manage processes like internal linking, technical SEO, and collaborate with other SEO teams to improve practices.
  • Liaise with other Commerce teams and SEO leads to align goals and utilize crossover opportunities.
  • Work with Analysts to identify conversion and reporting opportunities.
  • Analyze data on rankings, visibility, traffic, and conversions to identify trends and growth opportunities.
  • Create competitor analysis reports for senior stakeholders.

Reporting

  • Own ranking positions and organic traffic for your vertical; monitor and develop action plans for fluctuations.
  • Manage SEO platforms, monitor competitor movements, and keep visibility lists updated.

Events

  • Create SEO-optimized content plans for major sales events like Black Friday, Christmas, and January sales.
  • Lead real-time optimizations during events, monitor trends, and recommend improvements.
  • Provide live and post-event performance analysis to stakeholders.

Essential skills required for the role

  • Proven experience in SEO, especially in on-page, content strategy, and technical best practices.
  • Affiliate and commercial SEO experience.
  • Experience delivering strategic presentations to senior stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Google Search Console, analytical tools, and SEO platforms.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret performance metrics.
  • Proficient in Google Sheets/Excel.
  • Interest in SEO industry updates.
  • Problem-solving skills and curiosity.
  • Time management and prioritization skills.

Additional skills (useful but not necessary)

  • Experience with SEO tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, ScreamingFrog, or Lumar.
  • Experience in conversion optimization or A/B testing.
  • Experience in editorial or newsroom environments.

The Telegraph offers a fast-paced, demanding, and rewarding environment with benefits supporting work-life balance, including flexible working, medical cover, parental leave, and more.
