Senior WordPress Engineer – Headless

Location: Peterborough (Hybrid, occasional office visits, once a month)

Full-time, Permanent

We are working with a leading digital media group investing in their web platform. They seek a Senior WordPress Engineer with strong backend skills, especially in headless WordPress at scale.

This role involves building high-traffic, content-heavy sites using modern, scalable architecture, including API-first, JAMstack, CI/CD pipelines, and containerised environments.

You will join a team committed to high engineering standards, DevOps practices, performance, and security. Your expertise in custom plugins, GraphQL, REST APIs, and advanced PHP will be essential for creating robust, reusable services across multiple sites and teams.

You will collaborate with engineers across the UK and Europe to develop the next generation of their platform.

Requirements:

• Experience in headless WordPress development (enterprise experience preferred)
• Deep PHP knowledge (versions 7/8) and WordPress core understanding
• Experience with REST APIs and WPGraphQL
• Development of custom themes/plugins optimized for headless use
• Knowledge of ACF, CPTs, taxonomies
• Secure API handling (OAuth, JWT)
• Performance optimisation skills, including query tuning, caching, CDN strategies
• Familiarity with Docker, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
• Ability to deliver clean APIs compatible with frontend frameworks like React or Next.js
• Understanding of JAMstack and scalable, API-first design

Location & Working Setup:

The team is based in London and Peterborough. The role allows hybrid/remote work, with visits to the office approximately once every 4–6 weeks.
