Job summary
Sweco Leeds is recruiting a Senior/Water Quality Modeller to join the Water team. You will develop and audit models to assess water quality, identify failures and risks, and propose improvements across sewerage catchments and receiving waters.
You’ll lead projects, collaborate with regulators and clients, and contribute to WFD compliance and NFM initiatives while developing your technical expertise within a flexible hybrid working model.
Qualifications
- Significant experience in water quality and hydrology applied to projects.
- Degree in geography, engineering, environmental sciences or maths.
- Strong knowledge of standard hydrological and water quality modelling software and environmental assessment tools.
- Ability to lead and manage projects, delivering against milestones and QA strategies.
- Knowledge of Flood Risk Assessment, Natural Flood Management and SuDs techniques.
- Progress towards chartered status (C.Eng or C.WEM).
Responsibilities
- Develop, calibrate, audit and interpret models to assess water quality in sewerage catchments and receiving waters.
- Undertake Urban Pollution Modelling studies to identify water quality failures and risks.
- Develop and appraise improvement options including CSOs and discharges.
- Provide technical assurance and peer review of modelling outputs.
- Advise on modelling tools and techniques (SIMCAT, SAGIS, InfoWorks ICM, MIKE, GIS).
- Produce WFD compliance assessments to support regulatory submissions.
- Design and support delivery of Natural Flood Management measures where appropriate.
- Prepare technical reports and environmental/water quality impact assessments.

This role can be worked flexibly with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.
As part of the Water team, you’ll promote the sustainable management of water resources, helping to protect the water environment and make people and places safer and more resilient to flood risk and climate change. In this role, you’ll play a key part in supporting water companies through AMP8 and beyond, addressing critical challenges around water quality, storm overflows and environmental compliance.
As a member of the team, you’ll provide technical support in Urban Pollution Modelling, working collaboratively with clients, regulators and multidisciplinary teams to deliver sustainable, innovative and practical solutions with real environmental impact. We’ll support you in developing your technical expertise so that you can become a real Difference Maker at Sweco.
- Developing, calibrating, auditing and interpreting models to assess water quality performance within sewerage catchments and receiving waters
- Undertaking Urban Pollution Modelling (UPM) studies to identify, assess and investigate water quality failures and compliance risks
- Developing and appraising improvement options to address identified water quality issues, including CSOs and intermittent discharges
- Providing technical assurance and peer review of modelling outputs, reports and proposed improvement options
- Advising on the selection and application of appropriate modelling tools and techniques, including SIMCAT, SAGIS, InfoWorks ICM, MIKE and GIS
- Producing Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance assessments to support environmental assessments and regulatory submissions
- Designing, modelling and supporting the delivery of Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures where appropriate
- Preparing technical reports and environmental and water quality impact assessments
- Have significant experience in water quality and hydrology applied to a range of projects.
- Have a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject including geography, engineering, environmental sciences or maths.
- Strong knowledge and experience of standard hydrological and water quality modelling software and environmental assessment tools.
- Demonstrate ability to lead and manage projects, working within agreed deliverables, key milestones, project methodology, quality assurance and control strategy.
- Knowledge of Flood Risk Assessment, Natural Flood Management and Sustainable Drainage (SuDs) techniques.
- Working or interested in working towards chartered status from an appropriate institution (C.Eng or C.WEM).
