Job Details

We are seeking a Senior Virtualization Systems Specialist to join our UK HPC Hub. This role is critical to the operation, support, and continuous improvement of our Nutanix-based virtualization infrastructure, which underpins both High Performance Computing (HPC) and Enterprise workloads. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in enterprise-level virtualization platforms,preferably Nutanix,and strong Debian Linux system administration skills. A solid understanding of backup strategies, compliance frameworks, and operational best practices is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and support Nutanix clusters running HPC and Enterprise workloads.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and performance tuning of virtualization environments.
  • Manage and maintain Linux systems (primarily Debian-based) and Windows Server systems across the HPC infrastructure.
  • Implement and enforce backup, disaster recovery, and compliance policies.
  • Collaborate with hardware, network, services, security, and application teams to ensure system reliability and security.
  • Participate in capacity planning, system upgrades, and lifecycle management.
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Participate in Change Control Review Boards (CCRB) and drive continual service improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize Jira Service Management and other ITSM tools to manage escalations, track issues, and document changes.
  • Support in-house applications and ensure alignment with infrastructure policies.
  • Balance support responsibilities with project delivery in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members.

Qualifications

  • Degree in any of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems or related computing subjects.

Key Skills & Experience

Essential

  • 5+ years with enterprise virtualization platforms (Nutanix preferred; VMware or similar also considered).
  • Strong understanding of backup technologies, data retention policies, and compliance standards (Veeam experience preferred).
  • Solid Linux system administration skills (Debian preferred).
  • Experience of supporting and maintaining Windows Server systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • A proactive, adaptable mindset with a passion for learning.

Desirable

  • Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience supporting HPC environments is a plus.
  • Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) in HPC or enterprise settings.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools (e.g., Zabbix).
  • Exposure to ITIL practices and change management processes.
