Senior Uveitis Fellow - QEHB Ophthalmology

Applications are invited for the post of Uveitis Fellow (Senior Clinic Fellow post CCT or equivalent if trained abroad) in Ophthalmology for 12 months at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. This post is to support the Uveitis service.
The Ophthalmology Department at University Hospital Birmingham is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. It provides Ophthalmology outpatient facilities and day case ambulatory local anaesthetic surgery.
There are 17 consultants who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities. As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by staff and specialist doctors, Specialty Registrars, an Orthoptic Department, Optometrists and imaging technicians, clinical nurse specialists as well as nurses. Pre-operative assessments and Biometry are done on site as well as fundus fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography with ultra-wide field Optos imaging, Optical coherence tomography, corneal topography, Heidelberg retinal tomography as well as ocular ultrasound and UBM.
The aim of this post is to significantly increase the specialising doctors\' ability to diagnose and manage the full range of complex uveitis problems and manage patients safely to use immunomodulatory therapies including biologics and biosimilars. The aim of this fellowship is to enable the trainee to be competent to manage a uveitis service as a sub-specialist independently. There will be particular attention to developing the trainee\'s knowledge of uveitis including regular interaction with the wider multidisciplinary teams. There will be specific training in the management of acute uveitis cases with both surgical and medical therapies including liaison with the inpatient infusion service for delivering systemic IMT therapies safely.
We conduct weekly Monday morning case-based discussions / regional MDT to discuss complex cases and conduct monthly uveitis subspeciality Tuesday lunch-time meetings. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit and governance activities and research clinics.
The successful candidate will be an empathetic, hard-working, conscientious doctor with excellent communication skills, who works well in a team and has an analytical mindset for problem-solving. A high level of organisational skill, good time-management and ability to appropriately triage complex cases and prioritise management as well as follow-up is also required.

Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are 4 hours each clinic PA.
At present there are no regular out of-hours on-call duties.
The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
The successful appointee will be expected to participate in 8 clinical sessions including clinics, inpatient ward reviews as required, triaging and managing patient-initiated follow-ups/PIFU and referrals via the CNS and Uveitis@uhb.nhs.uk and attend regional as well as national uveitis meetings. There are two sessions of postgraduate education, and the expectation is that these will be used for either education or research. A degree of flexibility for these sessions is built into the timetable and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.
