Job summary

AstraZeneca plc is seeking a Senior Scientist – Upstream Process Development for a temporary maternity-cover role in Cambridge. You will carry out hands-on mammalian cell culture process development, focusing on CHO systems, process optimization, and technology transfer to GMP facilities, while coordinating with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities include experimental design, data analysis, and reports to support CMC and regulatory submissions.

Qualifications

Degree (BSc/MSc/PhD) in biochemical engineering, bioprocessing, biotechnology or related scientific discipline.
Sound knowledge of mammalian upstream process development, media/feed design and CHO culture.
Hands-on aseptic cell culture experience including cryopreservation and inoculum expansion.
Ability to plan, execute, analyze and report process-development studies independently.

Responsibilities

Deliver upstream process development activities across CMC development cycles under minimal supervision.
Design and interpret mammalian cell culture studies (CHO-based) including fed-batch and perfusion.
Operate high-throughput bench-scale bioreactors (AMBR, <10 L) and data-driven optimization.
Apply DoE and statistical analyses to identify process drivers and robustness.
Coordinate workload across multiple work packages and support tech transfer to GMP facilities.
