Job description

HDI is a Corporate & Specialty Insurer part of the Talanx Group. With over 120 years of experience, HDI operates across five continents, around 40 countries and employs over 5,000 people worldwide.

The role
  • Develop a profitable book of business in-line with HDI underwriting strategy for Construction professions (Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Surveyors), and other Miscellaneous professions.
  • In line with 5-year planning, support the development of portfolio diversification, finding new PII opportunities to expand the core product offering of non-legal PII.
  • Drive the HDI brand in developing lead market capabilities, in accordance with underwriting guidelines and business plan.
  • Externally promote HDI to broking houses, supporting existing broker relationships and developing out their own network of supporting brokers providing client opportunities within appetite and also respond to new opportunities as they are presented.
  • Support the Underwriting Manager in developing strategy and broker relationships.
  • Lead elements of project work, such as rating development, appetite reviews, wording projects, at the direction of the Underwriting Manager.
  • Provide mentoring and work review of junior members of the team. Evaluate new opportunities and make recommendations to support the development of the account into new areas of PII.
Key accountabilities
  • Work under the direction of the relevant Underwriting Manager to write new and renewal large and mid-market Construction professions (Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Surveyors) and other Miscellaneous professions. Service existing accounts via endorsement and administration.
  • Attendance, both in person and virtually, at client meetings on a group and one to one basis. Ability to deliver key messages, deliver thought leadership and take detailed notes.
  • Utilise their experience and knowledge to work with the Underwriting Manager in developing the underwriting strategy and related project work for non-legal PII. Cascade their knowledge down to junior members of the team.
  • Work under the direction of the Underwriting Manager and collaboratively with other internal departments on developing and maintain pricing tools, MI, databases, compliance checklists, internal reporting requirements.
  • Provide support and challenge to the Underwriting Manager and assist in the mentoring and four-eyes reviews of junior members of the team.
Relationship Management
  • Develop and establish relationships with the panel brokers. Ensure high service standards maintained and clear communication of appetite and strategy.
  • Internally, establish communication with other branch offices that share the PI mandate across HDI and ensure collaborative working practices.
  • Maintain a general awareness of Market developments and opportunities and inform the Underwriting Manager of any relevant developments or opportunities.
Contribution to Strategy
  • Working with the Head of Professional Liability and Underwriting Manager to provide input and challenge into the Underwriting strategy. Ensure full understanding and adherence to the strategy once implemented.
Process Improvement
  • Identify and make process improvements for your area of expertise.
Project Management
  • At the request of the Underwriting Manager allow end to end project management for projects within your own work area and contribute to any functional projects.
Risk and Controls
  • Under direction from the Underwriting Manager, design, implement and maintain process controls to ensure the quality of the output for your area within the function. Ensure documentation of the processes and output is auditable i.e. accurate, up-to-date and accessible.
Reporting
  • Run, maintain and check reports as required.
Skills & experience
  • Direct experience of insurance related to the construction industry, Professional Liability or CAR experience.
  • Direct experience within the construction industry of related risk management/contracting exposures/insurance procurement.
  • Experience from Underwriting or Broking background.
  • Able to join/establish new relationships and relay key messages externally to brokers and clients to promote HDI.
  • Ability to deal with a high submission count and review risk with the same level of consistency of approach and attention to detail.
  • Strong team ethic and self-motivating character but with a desire to work closely with other team members and execute a collective strategy.
  • Desire to learn and improve technical underwriting skills through both formal and informal learning and share knowledge with other members of the team.
  • Calm and considered judgement even during peak trading periods.
  • Ideally degree educated or proven track record of relevant experience.
  • Experience working in the London (re)insurance market is essential.
  • Working towards or completed ACII.
