Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Senior Underwriter in our Marine Cargo team in our Aviation, Energy & Marine business.

With a wealth of experience across all key sectors of the Marine market, our Marine team (made up of Hull, Cargo and Liability) offers a range of insurance solutions for Marine Insureds.

Our London based team underwrites complex and diverse risks across the globe in a pragmatic and consistent way and looks to forge long-term and sustainable partnerships. Backed by Sompo’s exceptional financial strength, we offer significant capacity, with a dedicated claims handling capability and underwrite business through our company platforms in the UK and Continental Europe.

Our business, your impact, our opportunity:

What you’ll be doing:

  • Focus on renewal retention and new business production in a growing profitable Cargo portfolio of circa $40m GWP.
  • Responsibilities will include both renewal and new business within UK and International territories
  • Input into the Unit’s strategy in terms of risk appetite, portfolio management and growth.
  • Assist Unit Head with budgeting and development of new products and initiatives
  • Lead role in broker and client meetings
  • Provide technical input in product development.
  • Full and thorough underwriting of all accounts in accordance with underwriting guidelines and individual authority granted by management.
  • Monitoring all industry and specific account trends.
  • Line management responsibility for junior underwriter(s), mentoring and assisting in their development

What you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of 8 years relevant underwriting experience
  • Experience and technical knowledge of underwriting marine cargo
  • Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
