A little more about your role…Due to our expanding public and private sector workload, we are seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join our Mobility Team in Southampton. Working as part of an integrated team of planners, engineers and modellers, and collaborating with various disciplines across our UK offices, you will contribute to the successful delivery of our wide portfolio of projects by providing mentoring and technical advice to our team members and a range of public and private sector clients.
You will work within a team with a broad range of technical specialisms including development planning, Development Consent Orders (DCO’s), business case support, freight, sustainable transport schemes (bus/active travel) and Electric Vehicle Charging procurements. Our team also takes a strategic lead role on many large multi-disciplinary projects and works closely with our planning, infrastructure design, structures, and transport and environmental teams across WSP. Our projects span across the UK, with a focus on our South Coast clients. Our clients range from National, Regional and Local Government organisations in the public sector with developers, energy generators and utilities providers.
You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to a senior member of our Team with expected day-to-day tasks spanning the following:
- Providing day-to-day support in the delivery of a range of projects, which at any one time could include a selection of the following:
- Concept studies/strategies, business case development for sustainable transport schemes, development of feasibility studies/options appraisal reporting;
- Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Environmental Impact Assessments, Parking Studies, Access Studies, and Movement and Access Studies, leading to planning applications, post-permission, and discharge of planning condition works.
- Development Consent Order applications for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, primarily related to energy projects.
- Actively managing and leading efforts to build and maintain collaborative, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships with both clients and colleagues
- satisfaction.
- Taking on Project Management roles, ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and associated legal requirements.
- Involvement in high profile client engagement, stakeholder management, design team liaison (both internal and with other external multidisciplinary professionals) and project management

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
- A degree in relevant subject;
- Experience in contributing to and preparing relevant Transport Planning outputs (as outlined above) for clients across private and public sectors (although we encourage those with exclusive experience of either to apply).
- The ability to work at both strategic and detailed levels is highly desirable. Up to date knowledge on latest transport policies and legislations, design standards and planning processes applicable to the UK.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools, excel spreadsheets, transport data analysis and presentation and transportation software including TRICS and junction capacity assessment programmes.
- Ability to produce technical project and non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders, team members and present at meetings, workshops and public forums;
- Project management experience, with the ability to review client briefs and tenders, develop and contribute to fee proposals and lead project delivery including supervising workloads, task delegation, supporting junior staff and managing client expectations;
- Have a sound commercial awareness including effective financial management.
The following skills / qualifications are desirable:
- Membership of a relevant professional body and Chartered status;
- Master’s degree in Transportation Planning;
- Experience in suing transportation software including TRICS and junction capacity assessment programmes;
- Experience in using GIS packages;
- Experience of stakeholder management and public consultation
- Experience of supporting delivery of Development Consent Orders
