About the Role

As a Senior Traffic Engineer, you will:

• Lead on the design and project management of traffic management and road safety engineering schemes, ensuring compliance with the Traffic Management Act, Highways Act, and other key legislation.
• Oversee the design, management, and maintenance of traffic signals, and play a pivotal role in the operation and development of our Urban Traffic Management and Control Centre (UTMC/UTC).
• Provide expert technical advice to colleagues, senior management, elected members, and the public.
• Manage complex projects from inception to completion, including feasibility studies, technical and financial reporting, and public consultation.
• Supervise contractors, ensuring high standards of safety, quality, and compliance.
• Drive innovation in the use of intelligent transport systems.
• Support the Council’s commitment to a safe, free-flowing, and sustainable transport network.

What We’re Looking For

• A degree in a numerate or engineering subject, or significant practical experience in traffic management, road safety, or intelligent transport systems.
• Membership of a relevant professional body is essential.
• Strong project management skills.
• Extensive experience in traffic management, highway design, and the operation of traffic signals and intelligent transport systems.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
