About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer to join our Regional team, working across our UKCS Civils projects (East, North West, Central, South East, and South). The position is based out of our Leeds or Warrington Office.


This role involves multiple projects across various locations, providing diverse exposure to our portfolio.

What you'll be doing

The Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer will lead a team of engineers, providing technical support and development, and will be responsible for designing innovative and robust temporary works solutions. You will act as the project engineer for projects at different stages, serving as the main contact for temporary works requirements.


Responsibilities include:

  • Design and check temporary works for projects, including site establishment, haul roads, plant crossings, working platforms, service protection slabs, shoring, earthworks, ditch crossings, dams, formwork, temporary bridges, scaffolding, rebar cage stability, propping, foundations, beam stability, lifting points, etc.
  • Ensure designs comply with briefs and are delivered on time.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards relevant to Temporary Works.
  • Assist with sequencing and value engineering of works.
  • Apply engineering judgment and take responsibility for designs.
  • Prepare risk assessments and communicate residual risks.
  • Complete technical approval documents, including AIPs and Form C documents.
  • Understand legislation including CDM 2015.
  • Support site and office teams to ensure compliance with procedures.
  • Assist work-winning teams with design buildability and safety considerations.

Who we're looking for

Candidates should have:

  • At least 6 years of temporary works design and checking experience.
  • A BEng or MEng degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Chartered or working towards chartership with ICE or IStructE.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles.
  • Postgraduate experience, including site work and temporary works design.
  • Knowledge of proprietary equipment used in temporary works.
  • Familiarity with current standards and BS 5975:2024.
  • Good communication skills and ability to build relationships.
  • Experience with AutoCAD 2D/3D and other design software (e.g., Hilti profis, Tensar, Tekla, ROBOT).
