Overview

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for a Senior Telecommunications Engineer at its Headquarters in Brierley Hill. The closing date is 20 October 2025.

Job responsibilities

Design and apply a comprehensive range of procedures for security, recovery, restart (including from disaster) and incident/problem control.

  • Ownership of upgrades, patching, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of non-critical voice and data applications.
  • Guarantee integrity and confidentiality of information delivered to and sent by users in line with Trust and NHS policy.
  • Maintain security and performance targets for fixed and mobile telephony hardware and software; manage service quality.
  • Communicate effectively with users and IT staff, especially during emergencies, quality control, service restrictions, maintenance, and major system amendments (upgrades to equipment and software).
  • Investigate and improve service levels while minimising investment requirements; recommend new or revised policies or procedures and implement improvements within the scope of responsibility.
  • Work independently or as part of a team on deployment and planning of service projects, considering budget restraints.
  • Implement training documentation and deliver training to staff in IT, telephony and mobile equipment.
  • Plan and implement transitions from normal system operation to revised arrangements when operational demands require alternatives (eg Gold Control).
  • Supervise nominated resources to deliver objectives and ensure projects and tasks are delivered on time.
  • Supplier management: assist in obtaining and evaluating offers from suppliers; monitor performance and incidents; propose and implement improvements; assist in negotiating contracts and SLAs; liaise with supplier technical personnel for problem resolution.
  • Ensure supplier access to systems complies with security policy; control physical access to critical areas; maintain stock control.
  • Monitoring and reporting: monitor facilities for data on utilisation and errors; use performance data to trigger timely actions to avoid degradation or failure; monitor security and ensure compliance with ITIL and NHS policies; monitor the Trusts IT Helpdesk against internal SLAs; use software to manage and support communications systems.
  • Problem management: report service delivery problems, ensure awareness of problems and known errors, and facilitate timely resolution; respond to faults across Trust sites and with external customers under SLAs.
  • Maintain security and integrity of all communication systems; uphold change control procedures; ensure backups are taken; participate in IT hardware and software audits; support project-oriented tasks; ensure problems reported on the IT Helpdesk are addressed.
Additional Information

Ensures compliance with relevant legislation including Data Protection, Software Misuse Act and Copyright Act; participates in IT department on-call rota; attends IT Departmental Meetings; manual handling of IT and Communications equipment; undertakes other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • OEM-based technical qualification combined with 4 years working in an IT environment
  • Industry-based technical qualification
Experience
  • Knowledge of Avaya Communication Manager and associated services (AES, Breeze, AMS, SM, SBC)
  • Knowledge of Avaya CMS
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune) or leading MDM solutions
  • Specialist knowledge of Telecommunications systems with evidence-based experience
  • Willing to undertake training to fulfil job requirements including external training
  • Experience of working within an IT environment
  • Experience of large telephony and mobile communication installations
Skills and Knowledge
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex technical information
  • Good verbal and written communication including reports, presentations and system specifications
  • Willing to participate in the Trust IT on-call rota
  • Full clean driving licence
