LGC’s Grant Management Group (GMG) works with UKgovernment departments and arm’s length bodies to support medical and healthresearch across the UK. Our activities include funding call management,contract management and Intellectual Property management. As part of our expanding services to governmentcustomers, LGC is expanding its expertise in technology transfer. We arelooking for individuals with experience of technology transfer, intellectualproperty management and commercialisation of research in the medical, healthand life science sectors.

Job Description

Job Purpose

To work closely with researchers and officials toensure effective and efficient identification, management and commercialisationof intellectual property assets.

Key Activities:

  • Manage an assigned portfolio of complex IP andcommercialisation cases to deliver high quality outcomes in agreedtimelines
  • Regularly (at least once per week although morefrequent attendance may be required based on business needs) attend sites inLondon, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Salisbury, Swindon and Harwell to provideface-to-face support to researchers
  • Managing external Law Firms and Patent Attorneysto resolve complex IP and commercialisation cases
  • Developing business cases for IP commercialisationincluding, but not limited to spinout company formation or sale and licensingof technologies and IP assets
  • Business case development and negotiationincluding detailed analysis of the potential market, expected revenue streamsand commercialisation strategy
  • Leading negotiations with inventors, potentiallicensees and investors to agree terms that ensure MRC has a robust positionand financial reward
  • Facilitate and deliver training for MRC staff onIP and Commercialisation
  • Managing internal and external legal advice toreview and resolve contractual and collaboration agreementissues
  • Working with patent attorneys to ensue appropriatemanagement of IP for specific cases
  • Supporting other team members with complextechnology transfer activities
  • Support, as required, promotion of industrialpartnerships, management of the MRC reagents portfolio and provision ofentrepreneurial training
  • Perform due diligence review of applications tofunding schemes for IP and commercialisation related issues
  • Lead support of MRC researcher applications toother funders for the IP and commercial sections
  • Line management of up to two people asrequired

Qualifications

Required Criteria:

  • Degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) qualified in lifesciences with an additional qualification in business or law (advantageous) orcomparable experience
  • Significant experience of working inatechnology transferrole tocommercialisecomplex IPandpatentportfolios
  • Experience ofcommercialisation ofintellectual propertyin the medical and life sciencesarea
  • Significant experience ofnegotiatingcommercialisation licences and spin outcreation with a wide range of end users
  • Experience of working with industry, researchersand government to identify mutually beneficial outcomesforcommercialisation of IP
  • Ability to communicate complex informationregarding intellectual property and commercialisation to a range of audiencesusing appropriate style and format of messages

Desired Criteria:

  • Experience of a customer facing service role witha wide range of active projects at any one time
  • Experience of working with external legal counseland patent agents to resolve issues and ensure effective protection of IP assets
  • Experience of delivering IP related training toscientists
  • Experience of reviewing research fundingapplications and performing due diligence checks
  • Experience of line managing one or two directreports

NB:This is an office based, hybrid role, withan expectation for all employees to attend our offices in Victoria, London andCambridge, usually worked as 1 to 2 days per week, and may increase, subject toteam requirements.
